"That character is not logged in"

Sometimes when I try to buy an item from poe.trade, I Whisper the other person and it says "That character is not logged in".

Can I ask why I am seeing this eventhough they are still "Online" on poe.trade? I tried to add them as a friend and when I try to Whisper them it gives me "The specified character does not exist".

Poetrade doesn't work in real time, a few minutes can pass before it refreshes and in that time your seller can log off.

also, some people still use manual online status control, and may let the status expire rather than turning it off after logout

they might have been trolled in the past by people offering trade, then using up all their Map portals by running in and out quickly, and are protecting against it by disallowing party members from entering hideout (I believe when you are in Hideout you can click a Hideout button to configure this)

Oh, I see. So those map portals can only be used a few times before disappearing? How much do they cost? I am still new and not at end-game yet.

Each Map item opens up 6 portals to an area, and a portal is consumed when you go into it. The price depends on the Map; low to mid tier maps are fairly common and thus cheap in player trade, while igh tier Maps can get very expensive.
