Arbiter of Ash is bad game design for the sake of aspirational difficulty
Says it on the title.
If you've fought Mythic Kil'Jaeden in Tomb of Sargeras in WoW Legion, you'll know exactly why. Last bumped on Jan 12, 2025, 6:32:26 AM

Fun fight, went in blind.
Pain in the ass to get the keys but the fight was great. Diablo 4 is free to play if you want to try something easier. Step 1 is to self reflect.

I agree, it's bad design.
How I'm supposed to learn the fight? I have 10k shield (+10k from Grim Feast). In like 30 seconds I get 8 hits, that are one-shots (spheres), and no mistakes allowed. Then the boss casts "Flaming Gales" and 1 hit is ~15k dmg + stun/slow (I'm not sure). I even can't pause the game to check, what's going on. Some effects, for example. So, defense doesn't matter. Should I play with glass cannon to "have fun"? It's not cool to press space for 1 minute in a row. My character at least tripled it's dps. But the 1st time I tried to kill the boss, there was no "Flaming Gales" before 50%. The last time there was. Is it completely random? May we have: 1. warning like "not possible to pause the game during this fight" 2. less one-shot mechanics ? |

Design is absent here just like graphics.
Just entered for the first time. Didn't watch any vids beforehand. My char is quite strong with 10k ES and quite good damage from flameblast - I can kill 82 level t4 map bosses in 15s, so I managed to get arbiter to half while he was jumping, which was 2nd spell that he casted, 1st was some beam which I half dodged to the side as there was some visual indicator. Well after jumping ended I got oneshot by fire nova but main problem is there was no indication at all. The spheres that I think should be there didn't appear until next explosions after my char already died. I guess it just didn't render like sirus storms randomly do, maybe I'd figured to stand inside, probably I would run (I think the safe zone was inside the circle judging from nova animation but that's counter intuitive). Obviously I got a bit unlucky, if that spell was casted 4th or even 3rd I'd have a good chance to finish the t0 arbiter before, but goodness gracious no boss should oneshot you without any telegraphed delay (hectic jumping around does not qualify as delay, I though I need to dodge the jumps not remember where they are), oneshot mechanic must be configured to preload necessary resource to make sure they do render the indicators. There should be some thought put into design of a pinnacle boss - if its multiple explosions they should accumulate, i.e. miss one - small hit, 2nd one bigger hit, 3rd miss death, not each being a death blow. It should either be more tanky and deal much less damage on t0 or it should be 6 portal if you don't let to learn anything - Consort Radahn has a grace right in front of the gates for a reason. Currently its a glorified t4 map boss with atrociously high damage. 15s fight if you are lucky with rng, bit less if not. Feels even more terrible than opening a strongbox. |

For people who haven't can you provide actual feedback why you think its bad game design?

" They can't, because they don't understand the difference between difficult, personal dislike, and bad design. |

" My first fight - couple auto attacks, then the flame waves. 1st wave - walk into the barely visible lane of safe area behind the 172 layers of grey fucking fog. 2nd wave - roll to the new safe area, woosh, good to go 3rd wave - roll to the new safe area, woosh, good to go 4th wave - WALK three steps to the dead middle of the safe area, woosh, dead. It's the 172 waves of fog or steam or heat distortion or whatever you want to call it. I don't care if it completely breaks immersion - you want a one-shot fiesta in your end game boss fights? Make it FUCKING VISIBLE. A year ago or so I swore on my life that on-launch Uber Lilith in D4 was the worst miscarriage of a boss fight I'd ever seen. Arbiter of Ash might be worse. Edit: Just for clarity - not a D4 fanboy since that's the first thing everyone likes to point out. I played S0 and like 20 minutes of S1. Incredibly strong dislike for that game, and pretty much love EVERY other boss fight in PoE2 (Xesht is the PERFECT example of a learnable, visible, multi-difficulty boss).
