Create Hardcore Character Warning should appear *after* checking for name uniqueness
This was something that I noticed day one but hadn't posted about. It may be a minor thing, but it leads to an unnecessary frustration.
When you select a name and class for your new Hardcore character and press CONTINUE, the game presents a warning to the user (complete with a loud sound effect) to say: " That's fine, but the problem is that this warning comes up before the game checks to see if your selected name is available, when it most likely isn't. We all know how challenging it can be to pick a unique character name in POE. Doing so will likely require many tries if the user is trying to keep it short. The result is that the user is faced with this <DUN!!> Hardcore warning repeatedly and must accept it for every single name selection attempt until they finally choose an available name. The Hardcore warning should probably only appear when the name has been verified to be available. The user should only be required to accept this warning message once per character creation, not a dozen times as they try to pick a name. Edited to add: I realize that the current design may consider the need to assign the name immediately when it is found to be available. Changing the timing of the prompt may require some form of temporary name reservation (or character creation and subsequent deletion if the user changes their mind). I feel that the amount of friction created for the player in having to repeatedly answer the same dialog outweighs the added complexity. As an alternative, the game could: - check a second time for uniqueness after first verifying the name is available and waiting on the player to confirm the Hardcore warning; - only present the Hardcore warning the first time that the player selects a name -- once they have acknowledged it once, there is no need for them to be repeatedly prompted with the same warning as they search for an available name.
