Reasoning behind Regal Orbs

I was wandering, what's the reason for Regal Orbs existance? I fail to see what's the design philosophy behind them (aparat from being a leftover from PoE1). Why have this orb in the game, it seems to only be a nuisance. It's use is so very limited. Why not give Exalted Orbs the same functionality (add a random modifier and improve the item to rare if it was magic)? Because of how big PoE1 has become after so many years, why not clean the system up a bit and remove some "trash" for the sake of streamlinig and QoL?

Regal orbs are so cheap in trade that they're basically insignificant, all they do is ask players to click more. Exalted Orbs also have high inflation during the season, merging them with Regals would add a little more sink to them. And this change should also improve the SSF experience.

The same could be done with Transmutation/Augumentation, they could very easily be merged into one orb.

Unless there's a specific, very important reason for having a different orb for the first three item mods?

Because their use is intended to be during campaign only.. they would need to drastically increase drop rate of exalts to do what you suggest, and that woudl result in effectively all rares being "full rares" since exalts would need to be super plentiful...

I think regals are OK, but we need to get back an orb to remove a mod...
