Problem with azmeri spirits and split/chain abilities

Right now, spirits have to physically approach a target in order to either touch or possess it. Touching is instant, but possession has a delay. Spirits float on their own for a while, but they stop when they encounter a monster and wait for you to kill the monster before you can escort it further. You also need to escort the spirit directly on top of a rare monster, and then wait for the possession delay, before you are allowed to kill the monster and receive possession rewards.

This creates an issue with builds like lightning spear or any other long-range splitting and chaining skill that you can't control the distance or aiming of targets. You attack a target that's in your face, but your attack then chains away and ends up killing targets at the edge of your screen or even off of your screen. The result is that now those mobs never got the chance to get touched or possessed and the azmeri spirit mechanic didn't have a chance to function.

I find a rare enemy as I'm escorting a spirit, but there are a few monsters on the way to the rare. I have to kill the monsters, because the spirit won't pass through them; it stops when it touches the monsters. But when I attack the monsters, my attack chains forward, kills the rare enemy, the spirit now has nothing to possess, and it disappears.

It is a frustrating interaction and I feel like possession needs to be made to work with skills that split and chain from long range.

Somehow they managed to create something even more clunky than tormented spirits. Mind boggles.
