Skill design... tornado
|
I have to say the skill design in poe 2 in general has been really bad. All interaction mechanics are forced, intentionally built for specific skills to combo destroying all player freedom etc... hardly anything feels good or enjoyable on its own.. but tornado really stands as the king of that hill.
I left last season after a nerf but i came back to try tornado druid.. they literally nerfed frost bolt and lightning warp just so you couldnt use their ground effects on tornado it seems. Even when you get all 3 elements absorbed into this skill it does 0 damage. It doesn't even matter how much you optimize if you multiplied this by 10 it would still be bad. Yes there are other ways to get elemental ground effects, but not many, and early on you have especially limited options. Immediately after getting tornado all you can do is get chilled ground on freeze support, shocked on leap support gem with crit, and burning from curses... these all have long casts and make it feel super clunky, and when ur done ur 10 second combo at the end of the day it does 0 damage. It would be one thing if tornado actually pulled in enemies, then i could use it as a nice crowd control skill with another skill as the damage, but it does next to nothing for pulling enemies in. So.. its just completely useless, no cc, no damage, long cast time, big cost, wasted skill slot. I don't even want to mention the very few skills that actually have decent design for fear of the nerfs, but 95% of all of them feel like at one point someone had an idea... and then the same exact guy came around like he did the rest and neutered them. Yeah I really wanted to play a storm style druid but its just not a thing. This skill works with nothing I tried everything and its just not good. Cant crit, With one of the elements it cant generate glory for the shaman skill. I was so crushed i just quit playing my druid and made a smith build with bear cause at least that works for now. I hope its just bugged honestly because that would make more sense. I was looking forward to this class and it has so many great passives that would work with a tornado build if tornado could do literally anything.

Tornado is to me at the core of what is wrong with skill design in PoE2 (also tornado in PoE1 but that's beside the point)
If I pick a skill like tornado, it is mainly because of the base idea of the skill. Its a phys damage spell, yet it is literally impossible to play it that way because the only way to make it do any damage at all (barely) is to run it over elemental ground which triples it for each element. Seriously, the core design and function of any skill should be the intended way for it to function and exist. If I want to play Eye of Winter its primarily because it is a cold spell, not to transform it into a fire spell. The same is true for spark, or gas arrow, or firestorm, or whatever. Please, I have no issue with there being some extra functions and cross overs with other elements, but I beg you to protect the core identity of the skills a bit more. |

I don't know how it works on druid, but tornados are crap, small hotbox, takes .66 seconds for second hit and since you can't spam it like spark, they generally suck.. It can be saved with a bit of tracking... But for the time being, it's a situational piece for close environments.
Maybe they are better on druid, after testing them with bleed on Huntress, I got a very negative impression as a all around skill... Good for clearing but a useless piece of trash for bosses, unless, well, mirror tiered gear involved. |

Tornado is possibly the worst skill in the game atm. At least flame wall lets you shoot projectiles through it but for tornado the sources of ground effects are all a pain in the ass to use or borderline non-existent, and even then it isn't even good. It doesn't even have any sucking effect, plus it makes you blind, and elemental ground combos are the only way to make it do anything at all.
So no, it isn't any better as a druid. Also this is about tornado, not spear whirlwinds. Last edited by Kashou#2868 on Dec 17, 2025, 9:23:47 PM

yeah... tornado is pretty bad. i was playing dragon-druid and for me to use a flaming tornado, i have to first use oil barrage (un-empowered), then cast rolling magma because flame breath is locked until 50-something... and even then! with flame breath, the setup is just not worth it because you can just flame breath to victory at that point -- so tornado is rather useless/clunky.
and to top it off, once you can do a flame tornado, the boss/monsters just walks out of it and it becomes useless again! its just not worth triggering your RSI for so little damage. |
