Shouldn't there be short auction any time an item is posted for sale?..

For potential buyers to bid against each other. Even 5 minutes will be plenty for a hot item to get a fair-ish price.
Or you could allow sellers to choose the time. Or even post it without auction if they prefer it. Let us choose, basically.
