Boss Ground Effects: A Suggestion
|
I would like to take some time to discuss some in-game effects that have been on my radar for some time. I am referring to effects including, but not limited to:
1. Searing Runes (of the Exarch) 2. Maven's Punishment 3. Awakener's Desolation I find that the ability to completely disable my recovery when I am playing a tanky RF build certainly adds something to my play experience, especially when I am fighting Sirus in the Feared encounter. That Awakener's Desolation is a permanent effect definitely enhances the fight when Sirus and the Maven-created copy decide to put me in a desolation box. This alone would hardly merit a post by itself, but I began to wonder why slow tanking builds should have all the fun. Thus I propose the following effects: 1. A boss ability that prevents the boss from taking more than 1 million DPS. This will encourage people with high-damage builds to engage with the other abilities the boss does. It would also increase the amount of time that players spend on high-level encounters. So as to not adversely affect visual clarity, I recommend that this ability be represented by a translucent shimmer effect with 95% transparency and no large game-obscuring icon, unless the icon is to be tastefully located behind the boss HP bar. 2. A near-invisible floor effect that prevents the player or their minions from doing any damage. Did you step on the wrong pixel or did the boss enter yet another invulnerability stage? This keeps the mystery alive. 3. A ground effect or attack that sets the player's resistances and defenses to zero. Toss in a speed reduction effect so that the player can really feel the effect. This has the secondary benefit of balancing Chaos Inoculation without having to actually change the node. Win-win! In conclusion, tanky characters shouldn't have all the fun when it comes to unique and engaging boss effects. High DPS builds should get to experience boss fights as they were meant to be experienced: as a delight for the senses, a visual and auditory symphony that should last for hours.
