finding crafting recipes w/o chrome

When you want to have a tool for searching your inventory for matching items for vendor recipes but you don't want to use Chrome, then you are pretty much screwed.

One might think that you could go to SourceForge, look for DishOfExile and thus get an stand-alone (independent of your browser) program, however you should NEVER under NO circumstances even think about doing so.
The reason is obvious: An external program would require you to enter your password into it, which is a bad idea, because you will never know what happens with your credentials. Even if you assume that the original developer is not up to anything evil (which is a HUGE "if"!), you don't know if he knows anything about network security and thus your password wouldn't be safe.

However, the absolutely not mentioned tool nowhere above doesn't support anything else than looking for duplicate rare names, so it is hardly any alternative to the famous PoE Helper.
In addition, the not said tool would require Java 7, and noone wants to use that anyway. Seriously!

Nothing to see, please go along.
I wrote a tool (similar to the one you may or may not be describing) that stores user account info locally (password encrypted) and can log into multiple accounts and retrieve rare names located in the stash pages across all of the accounts. As far as network security, it posts account data to the website via https (I'm not sure you could do it any other way), so it's as secure as using the web browser to log in (and yes, I used a packet sniffer to ensure that the password was not going across in clear text).

It's not public in any way, and I'm not releasing it yet for a couple of reasons. I want to run it by the devs first, to make sure it won't break things (or make them angry in any way), and I also want to clean up my code so that I can release the source so if anyone wants to make sure it isn't stealing passwords then can.

I have been using it with the 1 Week HC Race beautifully. It throws the items in a local database and is much more useful for cross account matching, but it only checks for matching rares.

Is it really so difficult or time-consuming to just look for matches by eye?

I have a tab for helmets, one for boots, one for gloves, 2 for armor, 2 for weapons, etc.

Each type of helmet or boot or glove has it's own look, unique to that type. It really only takes me 5 seconds or less to be 'holding' a helmet and scan the helmets in my stash for a match.

IMO, a third party app for such a thing is completely unnecessary, and the tiny effort required to match it by sight is well worth the reward.
In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.
You don't get alchemy orbs by matching rare types, you get them by matching rare names. Like this (Amber Grasp):

I did that search in 5 seconds with my tool, if I did that with my naked eye, it would have taken several minutes as I have 50 rings to rummage through.

Items can also have matching names across different armor slots. For example, a helm can be matched with a shield or a chestplate.

So, to answer your question, yes. It really is difficult and time consuming to match those names with the naked eye, especially if you use 2 accounts with 9 stash tabs each, like I do (not to mention a few other accounts with 4 tabs each).

Some items in this post are currently unavailable.

I realize that. I mean that just by looking at the graphic for the item, you can tell whether it might match or not.

So since you only have to compare it to other items of the same graphic, I maintain you can do this in seconds, as long as you make the effort to keep your stash organized.

I currently have 9 tabs as well.

you seem to missed this:

Not even that each item type has different graphics on its own, just by the different tiers, I cant imagine how you expect an easy graphics comparison between complete different types of gear (as given above, helmet, shield, chestplate for example)?!

If you dont like the things Chrome does, you can do like me and use Iron, a Chromium engine based browser without the google sniffing, and also available in a portable version, where you not even have to install anything (but you should know what you do for some amount, installing the extension is a bit more difficult then - but it works)

What kind of info can google get from you if all you do is log into path of exile and use the POE helper, using another browser for everything else?

I guess it's more on principal, than not wanting to see adds for stuff like "I heard you like kinky pron and pirating movies, click here for more!" or whatever.

thats why I suggested to use the portable version, as the simplest addition to another browser for anything else beside POE.

And ack - its a general thing of disliked behaviour..

I like to imagine that the helper is only a temporary thing until you can do all the same stuff in game. The whole inventory tetris isn't exactly compelling gameplay. I wont be sad to see the end of it.

The only reason the extension is a chrome plugin is to get around cross domain security issues. There isn't any chrome specific functionality in it.

so:

1) Someone sufficiently motivated could port it to the browser of their choice.

2) GGG could take the code and stick it on their website someplace. It'd probably work in all modern (and vaguely standards compliant) browsers without many changes. The only part i suspect would cause issues would be the local database access which seems to vary a bit between browsers.

anyways. chances are neither of these things are going to happen. so unless you want to do the first one yourself, installing chrome probably is the easiest option :p
