That's a gray background, not a white background. Gray backgrounds are for utility items, in this case a hammer useful for a chisel recipe.

Oh I see. Guess white really means white and not a shade of white.

What about normal items with a purple or grey border? I can't find any information about those. Neversink speaks about unqiue items with purple borders but not on white items.
