Back to the last part of your calculation that I've just read, it's still wrong. You multiply the damage by the difference of lvl20 and lvl28, so 8 levels, but that is with empower and a 20to21 corruption included like a free thing. You can at most multiply with 4 levels difference imo, +1 all, +2 ele, +1 on empower effect which actually comes from the staff itself.

yeah thanks for clarification but calculating is not for humans, putting into order what to calculate is that what matters. i wasnt expecting such resistance from anyone, so i didnt put much thought to my math there. cause its very simple you know.

its simply,

-> compare base X-Y average of

lvl24 (white staff + lvl 21 gem + empower gem) vs lvl 28 gem(+3 staff)

->get the percentages(assuming white staff + lvl 4 empower is 100%),

->change your base damage for +3 staff(100 base) according to the percentage difference.(140-150-180 or whatever)(difference between X-Y is constant multiplier, changing it from the very start would make the math easier)
this will be your base damage.

-> multiply base damage with increased damage from your tree/gear, add to the base damage.

-> substract two values, voila you have the increased damage amount comes from +3 gems value of staff.

even now maybe i'm doing mistake(small) cause its been years that i did any math by hand -we use programs like SAP2000 or Revit to do those- but general overview to what to do is this.

if someone good willed towards me and who is willing to learn would like to see the result for his/her build, might use this as an example of doing the math and would do it.

As yourself said people need easily digestable quick information, and what you provided in your first example was very much incorrect at multiple points, and I made a joke so you would realise your mistakes, sorry you didn't get that, but instead you got offended by it and started making personal comments on my builds and defend your irl profession, which I honestly don't care about, and sorry again but I'm not into that type of pissing competition, but this is the good forum to pick someone else for that. With a similar mindset you can understand that I value being precise on such calculations, even tho It's just a forum of some video game on the internet that only a few people read.

To correct your example:
lvl20 FB avg damage is 924
lvl24 FB avg damage is 1391
lvl28 FB avg damage is 2078

lvl4 empower, 20to21 corruption and +3 staff (8 levels total) give 125% more damage (rounded from 124.84)

assuming the same 350% increased damage total from gear and passives

without any bonus levels the total multiplier is 4.5 or 350% increased

with 8 bonus levels the total multiplier is 2.25 * 4.5 = 10.125 or "912% increased" rounded

so 8 bonus levels on top of lvl20 fireball in this example means 562% increased damage BUT this is what I criticized in my second comment, that not all 8 levels come from the staff itself, and saw that you also corrected it in your general calculation method, that the lvl24 and lvl28 must be compared


+3 staff on top of lvl21 base and lvl4 empower (lvl24->lvl28, 4 levels total) gives 49% more damage

with 4 bonus levels the total multiplier is 1.49 * 4.5 = 6.705 or "570% increased" rounded

so 4 bonus levels on top of lvl24 fireball in this example means 220% increased damage


to further extend the example let's calculate what libri's staff gives

adding the flat damage (81 avg) on top of a lvl20 fireball makes the base an avg 1005 damage

in a percentage value the added flat damage gives 1005 / 924 = 1.08766 ~ 8.77% more damage

total multiplier of bonuses that come from the staff is 1.08766 * (1 + 3.5 + 1.07) = 6.0582 or "506% increased" rounded

in this example libri's staff means 156% increased damage to a lvl20 fireball

As this is only one skill there are few things worth mentioning:
If you add flat damage to a higher level gem, it will have a lower effect
Fireball in comparsion to other skills scales rather well with additional levels, most skills benefit less
Fireball in comparsion to other skills scales rather worse with added flat damage, most skills benefit more

My conclusion as the easily digestable quick information is that +3 staff for fireball is better than libri's spell+flat staff, BUT for other skills like Flameblast, the +3 staff can be less effective than the other one.
