[3.4] Teleports Behind You - Poet's Pen Lightning Warp & Arc, MF / Facetank t16 / Shaper / U. Elder

3.4 changes

Nothing changed.

3.3 changes
BUFFED!
The build is stronger than ever in 3.3. Arc now has greater area coverage due to forks. It also got a massive damage buff , especially against single target. Ball Lightning got buffed as well. For single target the new recommended setup will be arc + ball lightning. The build has no other changes.

This build uses Lightning Warp and Arc, socketed in 2x The Poet's Pen wands, in order to speed-clear maps. While this is NOT a cheap or beginner build (startup cost of 1-2 exalted), it should be possible to use this character as a league-starter and slowly acquire all of the necessary pieces.

This build clears maps faster than the traditional Unearth + Bodyswap + Volatile Dead combo, and relies on Ball Lightning + Arc for single target. Defenses include ~7k eHP with Mind over Matter, and Acrobatics/Phase Acrobatics. With the changes to Elementalist, Ball Lightning shocks enemies dozens of times per second, which has incredible synergy with the Mind of the Council helmet. This build is capable of clearing essentially all content, including Grandmasters, Shaper and Uber Elder.

Strengths & Weaknesses
+ Clears maps faster than VD + Bodyswap
+ Enough DPS for endgame (Shaper, red elder, Hall of Grandmasters, all maps to t16)
+ Tanky enough for all softcore purposes (7k eHP, Acrobatics, instant leech)
+ Easy to replace several gear pieces with magic find gear

- Moderately expensive, not the best league-starter
- Cannot do elemental reflect maps

Build Mechanics
Poet's Pen
The Poet's Pen wand triggers a socketed spell when using an attack (Default attack, Frenzy, Barrage). If holding two Poet's Pens, one spell from each wand is triggered simultaneously when an attack is used. Each Poet's Pen spell has a cooldown of 0.25ms. This means that you cannot simultaneously trigger the same spell socketed in two Poet's Pens (i.e. if I have ball lightning in Pen#1 and ball lightning in Pen#2, only one will be casted per attack).

In order to trigger spells every time they're off cooldown, it is ideal to have <4.00 attacks per second. In fact, it seems more ideal to have an attack rate of 3.75 attacks per second, possibly due to server tickrate. It is possible to use gear with Cooldown Reduction (can be found on belt and boots) in order to increase proc rate of spells. However, this requires a significant investment in attack speed. If you have a 20% CDR belt, you ideally want >4.7 APS, but this requires an investment of about 50% increased attack speed compared to 3.75 APS. In the end, the CDR belt causes you to sacrifice a lot of skill points and jewel mods which could have been used pumping up your damage instead, and it causes you to lose the Darkness Enthroned belt. Therefore, I do not recommend using CDR gear for this build, because the investment in attack speed is too costly.

Beacon of Ruin
This Elementalist ascendancy node really makes the build tick. Elemental proliferation allows the build to shock entire packs of monsters - without it, Arc would only shock 7 monsters in the pack. This is important because of Inpulsa's Broken Heart - when every single monster in the monster pack explodes, it results in very efficient and satisfying pack clears.

This node is also important because it grants a minimum 20% shock. When combined with %shock effect from skilltree, the Arc gem, jewels, and Inpulsa's Broken Heart, the build achieves >45% shock against all endgame bosses. Aside from being a huge source of DPS, this is also important because it allows Ball Lightning to shock bosses many times per second, resulting in insane mana sustain with the Mind of the Council helmet.

Mind over Matter
This node has great synergy with the Mind of the Council helmet, especially because this build shocks enemies dozens of times per second. It allows the build to scale up to 7k effective HP. In order to get the most out of the Mind over Matter node, 70% of life pool should be Life and 30% should be Mana. Another guideline you can use is, Mana = 43% of life. I.e., if you have 4900 life, you need 2100 mana.

Leveling & early gear options (this section under construction)
New Player / League Starter

If you are starting from scratch (no Poet's Pens), please refer to Enki's Arc Witch guide for an in-depth leveling tutorial which includes relevant skillgem setups, quests, and farming zones. Scroll down to the section that says "leveling this build." Enki's build guide is fairly comprehensive, however there are 2 changes you should make if following my build:

1) In Act 2, HELP ALIRA instead of killing her.
2) Use these skilltrees instead of Enki's skilltrees:

20 skillpoints
40 skillpoints
60 skillpoints
80 skillpoints
100 skillpoints (transition to Poet's Pen)

Use Arc / Storm Call and progress through the game. Acquire a Diamond Flask whenever possible, and use Herald of Thunder & Herald of Ice to keep up your clearspeed. Continue farming until you can afford 2x Poet's Pens. BE CAREFUL WHEN PURCHASING POET'S PEN. If the wand is corrupted, then you CANNOT alter its sockets with jeweller, fusing, or chromatic orbs - therefore, only buy a corrupted Poet's Pen if it has 3-links and the colors that you desire.
In Pen 1, use

In Pen 2, use

In your Weapon swap ('x' hotkey), acquire a Pledge of Hands or a cheap 5L staff for single target damage. In the staff, use the following gems in order of importance:

(Omit Spell Echo if using Pledge of Hands)
Once you can afford 2 more Poet's Pens, place them in your weapon swap ('x' hotkey) and equip them as follows:
Pen 3
"
Pen 4

Other unique upgrades for your other gear slots should have the following priority:
For players who already have currency

When you can equip Poet's Pens, use the following setup:

You can use Doedre's Tenure or Lochtonial Caress gloves for a nice clearspeed boost. I also like using The Gull if it is available in league, as well as Abyss jewels that grant Onslaught on kill. Equip Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder, and Frenzy as they become available.
Continue using this setup until you can equip Inpulsa's Broken Heart at level 68. Then, switch the links in Pen 2 to the following:

Items
Ideal labyrinth enchantments:
Helmet - Reduced Ball Lightning Projectile Speed
Gloves - Commandment of Reflection
Boots - Adds 1-160 Lightning Damage / Damage penetrates 10% elemental resistances / Chance to dodge spell damage if you've taken spell damage recently / Chance to avoid being stunned if you've killed recently

Ideal jewels:

  • % Maximum life/mana
  • % Lightning/spell/area damage
  • % Spell damage while dual wielding
  • % Critical strike multiplier with spells/lightning skills/elemental skills
  • % Critical strike multiplier while dual wielding
  • % global critical strike multiplier

Ideal abyss jewels:

  • + Life/Mana
  • % Global critical strike multiplier
  • % increased effect of shock
  • + Lightning damage added to spells / while dual wielding

Boss Fighting setup (7k eHP):

Instead of a second life flask, you can also consider The Wise Oak or Vessel of Vinktar.

Magic Find setup (6k eHP, 46 iiq / 47 iir):

FAQ
Should I play this build as an Ascendant?
Ascendant - Elementalist only gets 10% minimum shock. Ultimately, this causes the Ascendant version of the build to only achieve about 20-25% shock against endgame bosses. After considering the extra jewel sockets from Scion, as well as the Inquisitor subclass nodes, an Ascendant gets approx the same DPS and life total as an Elementalist.

The benefit of Ascendant is that it also gets immunity to elemental reflect. However, it does not get innate Elemental Proliferation. This ultimately causes the build to be slower at clearing maps. (Example: Inquisitor without Elemental Proliferation clearing a Minotaur map - it is slower than the Elementalist clearing Minotaur) This can be somewhat resolved by getting a Poet's Pen with Elemental Proliferation corruption, and socketing Arc into it. Even with that item, the clearspeed is a bit slower.

In the end, it is your choice - elemental reflect protection vs about 10-20% difference in clearspeed.

what would you recommend for jewels in the passive section?
Those who stand should never out number those who kneel.
kind of interesting
not elemental reflect immune
how about uber atziri ?

I might just try this build, looks super fun and I've always wanted to revisit Arc since the early days. I have a 6L inpulsa, should I swap some gems around or sell it and buy some gear with the extra currency?
Hum, I can see why you picked the elementalist, but wouldn't the Scion being better for that build?

With the elementalist, you have:
-20% increased damage from shock
-25% lightning pen
-25% increased effect of herald
-77,5% increased elemental damage

With the scion (Elementalist + inqui), you have
-10% increased damage from shock (but you still have the perma shock) but also nearby enemies take 10% increased elemental damage, which equals to the 20% base shock.
-16% lightning pen
+1 golem
-Immune reflect
-40% effect of herald (but you can actually completly avoid herald of thunder if you want more mana, or use wrath for more damage, for instance).
-30% crit multi
-Immune ailment.
-Easier access to jewels and the scion life nodes.

I really would like to try this. Im so burntour with volatile dead builds.

How much is your single target DPS? PoB is Showing 18.8k(x5?) per hit with ball lightning and 100k for shock nova. Was wondering if this is viable for shaper.
I would also be very interested if the Scion Version would be better or worse. Do you have an idea for the tree @Keygen?
I love lightning.. I love poets pens.. I love the witch.. I love the yriel's skin.. found my new build thank you buddy <3

With very little modifications to the tree and the build itself (more damage, same EHP edition):
https://pastebin.com/uftMc07F

~20%-25% more damage, and you can dump the herald, either for more mana if you want more EHP, or for wrath (21% more damage on top of that) if you feel fine.
