This decision makes me question my investments in time and money. Both will be on hold until I am very assured that GGG manages to defy the fate of every single one of it's predecessors.
I bet your the type to feel entitled to take a girl home if you bought her drinks
I like to think it buys you at least the right to say she has a nice smile without looking like a rando street perv.
I'll give you that Mr. Rando street perv
(You still havent bought me my drink ;d)

I have a lot of thoughts around this announcement, so wanted to write them down to organise them:
1) 11 years of awesomeness deserves thanks. Thank you so much, you GGG champions.
2) Path of exile is currently the best game in existence. We know it, why wouldn't investors know it?
3) If GGG makes a lot of money, they have set the blueprint for dozens of similar games to follow suit. As a fan, I like this possibility. If you believe in market forces, you might see this as insurance that the game stays good, where currently there is not much competition.
3) 20 million sign ups and 2 million active users is a drop in the bucket of where digital entertainment is headed. The trend is that gaming and digital goods have outperformed movie and T.V studios (in gross value of the global market) for many years. Games are getting better, so people are choosing to spend more time on them. Almost all projections show the job market shrinking and leisure time, plus lifespan increasing. A game like path of exile could become the equivalent of an English Premier League (the soccer/football franchise supported across the world).
When I think of a future like this, I don't think about the money or the parent company. I think about a grandparent playing this game with their grandkids. Of schools using this game to to make learning fun, as happens regularly with minecraft. Of funny youtubers who currently have 15K viewers having 1.5 million viewers and becoming stars. Of POE tournaments held in stadiums, like League of legends currently is. Or Virtual Reality technology combining with games like this in a new form of exercise. I guess a 520 billion U.S.D. company is necessary for scenarios like this to be viable.
The whole point is losing your true, original values, constant development and improvement of the game based on community's and streamers' suggestions/feedback. I'd rather the game stayed true to their roots - if you expect players to grind for their gear and achievements in game, why DO YOU AS A COMPANY STRUGGLE TO GRIND IT OUT?
Who cares about the stagnant, boring League of Legends? Hollywood movies also make the most money by far worldwide, but are they the most authentic, real and inspiring? Do they teach you something positive about life? They are mind-melting brain-washing pieces of recycled garbage that people gobble up. You sound like you belong to that folk - Virtual Reality, Success based on the # of followers and the rest of it. I do not want that to happen to every single successful start-up developer who came from nothing. It is sad.
IMO it comes down to trust. I trust GGG. I trust that they will keep their values, and keen making an amazing aRPG, designed by aRPGers. I trust that they made the right choice and that everything said in the original post was accurate. When have they led us wrong?

I'm Chinese. I would say Tencent is a shit company when it comes to games, but that's mainly for Chinese players in China. Tencent is just nice to their overseas holdings. Just check Riot and LoL, objectively.
What Tencent really cares(in China) is that the investment makes it much easier to implement features that suits Chinese game environment in China server, a lot of which may be pay-to-win things I assume, as that's just how it works since online games appear in China. Something Chris said has indicated that vaguely. But for GGG it's just really simple: I give you money and resources, you make the game much better than now. You can do it, then we are fine.
I'm 70% sure Tencent won't interfere how GGG and the community outside China works. To mess up the game culture over years is suicide, which is the worst Tencent want to see.
As for the supporter pack things or so...GGG is not an "interest club" since far ago. Just treat them as product.

BTW, after this Announcement i think GGG need to turn off supporters packs, right? They don't need our support anymore! They got TONS of $$$, so why we still need to give them our money? To make they MORE rich? They floating in money and the will keep floating in them for next 100 years.
So yeah, please TURN OFF SUPPORTERS PACKS or RENAME it to DLC or VIP Access.
I too want to post annoying crap in multiple colours to make a point, because if that's all you have, we got a time-out corner right here for impatient buggers like you. So according to you, more money for the people who gave you this game is a bad thing, because god forbid that their brainchild not last another ten years at least, since the reddit hivemind doesn't agree with GGG deciding to hedge their bets on a more stable future.

So let's all play Incursion league, because it can be the last quality league. You never know. And supporter packs are quite nonsense now :)
ADD: Maybe we can expect new Microtransactions like "Buy 10 exalted orbs for $10". No, that's joke. But i really hope it will not go this way.

Supporter packs are still supporting GGG you idiot. Regardless of who owns what share of the company. Do you even know how the real world work? Big corporations invest a great amount of money that banks cant afford to take the risk on. They pay the money upfront, which means that GGG will be able to develop what they need for the next several years, regardless of the amount of supporter packs sold.
If you want a good polished product you need a lot of money, you can depend on random milenials with attention span of 6 seconds to buy supporter packs every now and again.
You all wanted free to play model with no pay to win and without subscription. Well you got exactly what you want you entitled "people"

Holy, there are a lot of people that spent too much time with Navali.
Prophecies of GGG's apocalyptic downfall are popping out like mushrooms on this site.
The first thing I was think after I´ve read this news was: Great, Now they have the finacial base the develop the content update of their dreams, get more staff, expand the game in a way they havent benn able to yet.
Maybe we get a storrytelling/Cinematic update, a short movie ect...
The possibilities have greatly enhanced with such a huge investor imo.
Good luck GGG, i´m expecting nothing less but your best work do be done in the future.
And don´t forget, with great fiancial power, comes great responsibility!

I hope you're renaming supporter packs (I won't be buying anymore after this anyway)
spare me the hypocrisy, money paid to developers supports the game, ergo, it wont change jack if they're still called supporter packs. All the money for operating expenses will still be covered by you, the players, so unless you want PoE to shut down, I'd think long and hard about this if I were you. Ultimately, it's your decision, but I hope it's not one you're going to end up regretting down the line if Tencent decides to step in because GGG no longer made any money.

This does strike a point, if tencent owns PoE and GGG staff isn't employed by them then who will the supporter pack money go to? If I wanted to directly support GGG there should be a way other than sending them a pizza, maybe if they started on some kind of a smaller project we can support.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.
