Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

Ah well, there is no way this spells anything good for the players.

I, as others in this thread will hold back on supporter packs from now on.
If tencent noticed and invested on GGG that means your team is doing the right thing. More explosive growth coming!
So I wonder what will be in today's news....

Maybe I cannot be like the actual (chess) player that realize a special move in a single moment, but yet have a sensitive question(haven't browsed the whole replies for same ones sry) - will this move have some impact on Garena POE in Taiwan, especially when the tension between the island and the PRC mounts?

dude, you still have garena POE running? i tried to download the game thru garena 3yrs back but failed with them saying they're not connected to GGG anymore so they dont have the game anymore..oh that's garena SEA, sorry have no idea about the tension...but i think the only impact will be POE china and global will have different timelines with updating and different content maybe? china getting more china-centric things..and i think you'll have them too if ur servers are near to theirs? just my theory though..cuz i tried to compare the contents from garena and global before..and they were different..try to pm support, they can give you a more correct answer hehehe
At first there will be no changes as Chris said. Sooner or later profit maximization will come. PoE was probably one of best f2p games relating to shop items.
I think in time we will have more things like on Chinese in version - paid respawns, resets ? We will see...
But greedy companies for sure do not have positive impact on things.
Well, how sad. Goodbye.
I wonder if Chris realizes how much of GGG's income was motivated by good will purchases from players. I just bought the $60 supporter pack over the weekend, definitely wouldn't have done that if I'd known about the buyout. People wanted to support them because they were an independent company making a quality product, and we wanted to see them succeed. I've given them ~300 dollars over the years, and I know a lot of people who've spent more. It isn't because we needed some shiny bauble for our account. It is because we wanted to see them succeed and continue making a game we loved.

With 80% of that going to Tencent, my motivation to spend money will strictly be "do I want a thing" and no longer "lets support this game I love." You can bet that I'll be a lot stingier with my money.

I'm going to keep playing the game, because in the short term it will still be the same game I know and love. In the long term, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Consider my enthusiasm dampened.

What I didn't see in the FAQ was why GGG needed the money. We might be a lot more sympathetic and understanding if we knew that GGG was hurting and needed outside money to keep operating, or to keep pushing out content at the pace we've come to expect, or whatever. Without any word on that, as far as we know, it is just Chris grabbing cash.
I'm really worried about this. A lot of your revenue have been from supporter packs. There has been a lot of goodwill support from people, including myself, because you've been independent and answered to no corporation. I've supported with close to ten thousand dollars since you released this game because I really believe in you. I think I, and likely a lot of other long time supporters, will probably be more hesitant to support you in the future - especially until we know the direction the game will take and the amount of influence Tencent will have. I hate the idea of my money going into Chinese pockets. I understand that you feel this is the right decision financially, but from an egoistic gamer's perspective this is like you're selling part of the soul that made this game so great. Gutted by these news.
If i had my own company and i was looking for money i would only sell 49% of it max. This is a sell out, quick cash out whatever. I have put in a ton of money into this game supporting an indy company. Not gonna pump in anymore money into this to make a chinese big player even bigger.
Well at least it's not Trion Worlds :D
