Multiple cast support gem

Not sure how fast the casting of spells linked to a multiple cast gem is, but I was thinking it would be awesome if you cast it once, and as the others are casting you can move around. I wouldn't particularly want to cast frost nova and just stand in one spot, moving around the battlefield having novas spraying off of you would be pretty cool.

If it's a max level gem and you have to stand still for all of the casts, you might get locked into place somewhere bad. It would be scary for a hardcore character, accidentally use it while an enemy horde is closing in and they get stuck in one spot spraying spells out. Then wham! they surround and kill you :(

Cool idea, not sure if it is 'balanced'. Maybe spells just stop once you move, so you don't have to be afraid to get surrounded while casting.

Maybe it's an idea for another support gem, the move while casting gem ;)

Of course the dex/str variants (multiple attacks etc) should receive the same privilege.

we should be able to move around while executing ALL special attacks including 'spells' . it would lend more credence to the action component of the Arpg .

It could be difficult to implement something like this, considering the mouse is used to move by clicking, as well as targeting abilities. Another game in development did this well though, an arena game called Bloodline Champions where you move up, down, left, right with keyboard controls and your abilities are fired wherever your mouse is pointing at.
---

if its going to be click only they can code it so your character does not --stop moving-- to release a skill if they are already pathing .

they can also make skilling cursor tracking whereby the skill goes where the cursor is pointing , rather than skill button then cursor click . *blc does it that way no click to skill target*

there are many different methods that can be used .

so long as the castings are fairly quick it probably wont be an issue anyway .

This is actually our desired behavior. One way to think of it is that you are trading the fact that you have to stand in once place, vulnerable to attack, and the upfront investment of all the mana it would take to cast all of the copies of the skill for a much faster cast speed. This will certainly increase your raw killing speed substantially, but you have to be aware of the possibility of getting surrounded, or getting stunned half way through and losing lots of your mana investment.

When you link skill gems, you have to think carefully about trade-offs.

It's actually a very interesting balance question for many Support Gems. What facets are we going to use to balance them. For Multiple Cast, the question comes up, should we increase the mana cost of the total skill to be more than NumCasts * ManaCostOfSkill to reflect the increased cast speed? Perhaps we should decrease the cost of the total to reflect the danger of being stuck?

We would certainly like to discuss ideas that people have for interesting ways to balance different support gems.

Definitely don't think you should decrease the cost. If your DPS is going up, you should probably at least keep it at NumCasts * ManaCostOfSkill. The interesting thing about this support gem is you may run into skills you want to use it on, but the skill cost so much (especially if you make it more than NumCasts * ManaCost) that you quickly just drain all of your mana. You might think, man I wish this support gem was at lvl 2 instead of lvl 6 but a lvl 2 is just going to gain levels anyway. Perhaps a support gem that decreases cost of active skills? Maybe that would be too overpowered.

I like the fact that you stand still. Anything that makes the player have to think more about positioning and timing will deepen the combat which is a good thing.

I don't like it that skill gems can get 'worse' when they level up though. I think a system where you can lock a gem at a certain level should be implemented then.
Say I specifically want my Multiple Cast gem to cast 3 skills to balance for the fact that I need to be standing still, that should be possible right?

Agree, if there are gems where the player may feel like it gets worse as it levels it would be nice if we could control which level it operates at (while it still gains experience).

Ah, that is very enlightening, thanks for the explanation. I was thinking the multi cast gem would mod the spell to cast multiple times with only the original input of mana. As the others have said I think it would be a great idea if you could stop a gem from advancing, or choose at what level a gem operates in case it becomes too costly to use or takes too long to work in combat.

Will other support gems that increase the power of spells increase the mana cost also? Such as multiple projectiles. If casting 5 fireballs in a straight line quickly costs 5 * the mana, does casting a spray of 5 fireballs cost the same?

The whole active/support gem meta-game just got a whole lot more complex for me, which I think is awesome and will get many people thinking about exactly what they want their skills to be doing.
