Multiple cast support gem

Will other support gems that increase the power of spells increase the mana cost also? Such as multiple projectiles. If casting 5 fireballs in a straight line quickly costs 5 * the mana, does casting a spray of 5 fireballs cost the same?

The way we do the trade off currently for multiple projectiles is by reducing the damage of each projectile. You still do more damage in total than you would have before. So it might be say, 4 projectiles with a 30% damage penalty per projectile. (I can't remember what the real numbers are currently).

As you continue to level the gem up, not only do you get more projectiles, but the damage penalty per projectile is reduced.

How fast do skill gems level? Will it take well past end-game to achieve a top tier gem?

Yes, they will take the lifespan of multiple characters to achieve.

Excellent, that means even once you've got max level and chosen all your passives, you will still be getting more powerful as you farm loot.
That also means that gems will be leveling up so slowly that you really don't need to worry about it becoming more powerful than you can handle.

Will there be in between gems? Like a purple gem that can fit into a red or blue slot and gives smaller benefits of both colors.

Maybe super-rare white gems that give a specific ability but can fit into any color slot.

Or also super-rare unimprinted gems. They would have no color or ability when you find them (only a level). They would only gain their permanent color and ability the first time you slot them into an item. The color they gain will be the color of the slot and the ability they gain will be influenced by the abilities of the item you slot them into.

Can there be the option to permanently attach a gem into an item? It would give a bigger bonus and/or gain XP faster but you could never remove it.

“Chaining” support gem: Once the linked spell has hit one target, it replicates itself and targets another nearby valid target. For example, the fireball would explode and then launch another fireball at a nearby monster. Higher levels of the Chaining support gem cause it to target additional consecutive monsters. This support is useful for more than just the obvious damage increase, because it makes the skill somewhat fire-and-forget. The player isn’t locked in place like they would be with the “Multiple Casts” support gem (which causes several copies of the spell to be cast in series).

“Protection while casting” support gem: Puts a temporary additional Energy Shield on the caster for the duration of the linked spell’s cast time. This is very useful for skills such as Ice Nova where the player is generally in the middle of a group of monsters. It’s also useful for use with the “Multiple Casts” support gem where the player spends longer than normal casting a sequence of spells.

Seems the people who like casting on the run will now be happy too with the chaining gem, and the people who like to cast in the face of monsters can now use the protection gem. I wonder if this topic helped in the creation of these gems :)

Given the amount of dev attention this got at the time and the fact that it was posted 3 1/2 years ago (predating Multistrike by a long time), looks like the devs considered the idea of multicast but then decided against it.

Multicast and Multistrike were both in the early alpha versions, predating closed beta. Jonathan's posts here back in 2010 were referring to that implementation of Multicast.

They were both, at the time, completely and utterly OP. Multistrike has since been reminagined in a more balanced form. The same may or may not occur for multicast at some point.
