YEAHH! I received an answer through support by Chris himself that is very reassuring:

Chris Wilson replied:
Technically it counts the number of players around the owner of the totem. This is a bit weird so we should probably fix it up.

I pointed out also the issue about the x0 drop on long distance broken vases / killed monsters,
that doesn't take into account even the killer IIQ/IIR.

though i think next patch will solve the bug!

This addresses part of the problem.

What about skills that reach further than a screen away from the player?

What about the fact that players simply cannot always stand right next to other players (perhaps a lesser concern compared to the others)?



Also, why not just count the players *beyond one* around the given area? Assume there's at least ONE player in all parts of the room, just maybe not MULTIPLE unless they're nearby.

Not a good idea IMHO. If they did that how would they know quickly (within days) how the changes affected higher level characters? I know some players will be able to devote a good deal of time so that in a couple weeks they can get leveled up quickly again but I am guessing most of us have a life outside of the game too and it would be a bit impractical to expect the average player to want to grind through the lower levels over and over.

You mean poe at its current state that 4/5 players are pissed with the loot issue?
Also, did you play the alpha? or the beta? Or even titan quest?

ROFL! You mean the 1/10 of casual scrubnoobs whining on the forums instead of playing the game and which therefore makes them to be seen as the "majority" talking here when in fact 9/10 of the core-gamers are enjoying the game without problems?
