Hive Fortress as melee / short range?

The person that you must protect gets hit before you have a chance to kill the enemies. Even if you insta-kill on hit, you will likely still lose.

I searched everywhere I could and asked some people but the only response was: "you're screwed" or "reroll".. What am I missing?

EDIT:
Because this post was moved to feedback and suggestions.. I assume that this is a problem currently in the game where any build that doesn't have (enough) range virtually cannot solo complete a Hive Fortress... I hope this will be changed soon.

Seconding this. I'm playing melee oriented character. I'm forced to dangerously stay around in close proximity to the NPC so it doesn't get overwhelmed, but it still eventually dies to some random nonsense, coming off screen at times. Even the normal encounter is tough, unless the map walls off access points to 2 or less choke points. Looks like I will either need to skip this, or just roll a summoner. Again >_<.

Imagine a new player coming to POE1, seeing kinetic blast in action by itself, seeing heavy strike in action by itself (no multi-target support), and being told that this is OK.

You can have a beefed up cyclone AOE and this fortress is near impossible as "Melee". Good luck manually targeting in "true melee" with strike skills.
I did it fine on boneshatter jugg. I havent used any other melee skill this league though. You can probably stick in herald of ash to help.

I see you playing a spark caster. I assumme the boneshatter one died at some point?

As RF I find it impossible to reach all the mobs coming at me from 5 directions while preventing them from attacking the npc off-screen. Even with insta kills and proliferation, I find the ranged and jumping enemy to just become to spread out to engage all of them at once.

i died to one of the new bosses from last league. his mechanics werent rendering and i was slammed.

Enshit is my characters on poeninja. reckon if you die it leaves from hc now that they changed it. that sucks. it will be harder to get tech ideas from other people now once they rip.

Even after patch im still finding them quite hard. I have a 6L now, but in t11 map i barely got to 12 waves. At least we get some gear from it, but still too hard as bleed quake.

I don't know what the fix is, but it just feels like i cant get as much reward as screen clearing builds.
