Officially Supported Linux Client

I have tried this game. I love it. Problem? I won't use Microsoft Software anymore. I think that future belongs to free software because mind of people are changing. I have serious moral principals so i won't make a dual-boot-just-for-gaming-solution again. Virus and Piracy are there, never more support that s..t. I guess i could played Path of Exile in Debian Linux in the future. I prefeer to wait. I had been trying to run this nice game with wine but i could not get success, snif. I am a Diablo-Saga-rpg-games-lover (Diablo 3 NOT included of course, i have a very good taste :) ). I am playing Torchlight 2 now without any problem. Torchlight 2 have a lot of hours of fun and is very replayable, so i hope to play Path of Exile when i finished Torchlight 2.

Thanks for make this awesome free game, and thanks to all that support it with donations.

Only a simple petition: next time PLEASE think in EVERYONE. We love you!

If you are not capable to make Linux port I hope you will at least make PoE work better on Wine. Not having guarantee that game works on Wine later in future stops me putting any money on this game. Maybe kickstart fund the linux port?

Maybe a WINE wrapper for the steam version?

I can get POE to work on Ubuntu 13.10, and runs well, except for the font problems, that I hope, can be fixed. Also, the launcher client is all messed up, its got a white background, the updating bar at the bottom is discoloured and un-detailed, and the fonts in a light gold. The IN GAME font is my biggest issue. There are many problems with letters and numbers having random ticks and marks around them that can make most text illegible. The worst case is the "This is a support Gem" Description, its just one cluttered mess. And any descriptions on Unique items are screwed up as well. One final problem is of course the random CPU spikes, and my frame rate (capped at 60) dropping to 30 in dungeon areas, strangely, this fps drop caps itself at 30, until I go to town, then come back to the dungeon area, only for it to lag once again after...idk..about 10 minutes, sometimes 5. Other than that this game runs beautifully. The IN GAME graphics appear normal. Sound works great.

Side Note:

When using PLAYONLINUX, you can create virtual drives to run POE with. For some reason, I cannot run POE on the 64amd virtual drive, I’m forced to play on a x32_x86bit virtual drive. This annoys me because I don’t have access to High resolution textures, and of course, my computer is not running to its full potential. Does anyone know how to run this game on x64amd virtual drive? Or is it just un-do-able?

I play on steam for windows, but I love to see a port to linux. It would save me a lot of reboots ^^
I also would love to see proper support for wine or a native Linux client. I do not use window anymore outside of work.
Already counted.

Another point FOR a native linux client - it would run on the SteamBox.

I'd be thrilled to have the option of running PoE on Steam for Linux, SteamOS or any Linux distro.

More to the point, I'd also be very happy to --pay-- for a Steam for Linux version or a SteamOS version.

I'm aware that creating a second client is a huge undertaking: nevertheless, there are a fair few houses who have gone down that path: risk vs. return. GGG would i'm sure, only commit resources with a fair chance of making a return.

Like I said, I'd pay for a linux client: I would hope some other people would pay for that option too. If so, maybe there's hope for a kickstarter or indiegogo campaign or some crowdfunding effort like that to create a Linux client. That would still leave GGG able to distribute the Linux client for free, which is, as I understand it, quite rightly part of their M.O.

Just my ha'penny's worth.

I'm using Arch with latest wine.

I also tried vanilla Ubuntu and Debian.

this is an excerpt from an interview to Ryan 'Icculus' Gordon:

"

One of the major reasons publishers and developers give for not releasing a Linux version of their games is that the demand doesn't justify the extra development cost. Having been involved in this process numerous times to do this very thing, what do you think about this stance?

I think it's short-sighted. A one-man team--me--can take a completed game and port it to Linux. Usually this is pretty fast and cheap.

If they had concerned themselves with portability right from the start, there would be no problem at all. Maybe have a single Linux (or Mac, or whatever) developer on the team, who would be responsible for that platform but otherwise is just building the game the same as everyone else. No doubt some of their time would be spent on platform-specific issues, but this cost would be amortized into the project. Also, as they find bugs that are exposed through cross-platform development (which are otherwise hidden until your customers find them for you), it's possible you save time and money.

Blizzard has a handful of Mac developers that maintain all their titles in a similar fashion. It's an insanely small portion of their devteam, and it's clearly been profitable for them.

I couldn't agree more.
