Floating damage numbers
I couldn't find any thread on forum about this and if it exists i'm sorry to repost.
When we hit enemies in game all we can see is change on their health bar. But it means nothing if we cant know the number, so i suggest an optional addon in game options for floating damage numbers. That way we could for example see when we crit and know that our flasks refill (refill on crits ones), we could also see the damage we do on various monsters on various areas. It would especially be useful when pvp option is out, i bet everyone would like to see what dmg they do to some heavy armored class or simmilar. Now while i play i only feel that my dmg is invisible, some hidden stat, and avg dps is too cryptic to measure my damage quality. Thx for attention. Spreading salt since 2006

I support floating combat text!
After watching a lot of Diablo 3 Beta videos I think Blizzard did a good job with the combat text in d3. You see the dmg you do, the dmg done to you, healing and, very important, you see status changes like "Chilled" "Frozen" "Shattered". I dont know if you see misses (can you even "miss" in d3?) but seeing these would be important too. In summary, you get more combat feedback with floating combat text and I think it is a little bit of standart for hack and slay games these days. (Torchlight 2 has it too as far as I know). Edit: I'm referring to these videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/synark123#g/u (Am I allowed to post this link here?) Last edited by siis#7407 on Sep 8, 2011, 9:30:14 AM

" I have seen at least five threads like this in the last two weeks. :) Here's my opinion on this: You are hitting dozens of enemies at once in this game all the time. My ranger is nowhere near perfectly equipped but I already fire 5 arrows 2.6 times a second (which pierce and hit more than 5 enemies). Witches can shock nova the whole screen two times a second, often more than 50 enemies at once. If you'd see the damage numbers on the screen, you would see nothing but numbers. Sure, I have nothing against an option to turn these on, but I am sure nobody will have this enabled in the later stages of the game. Besides, it provides zero additional information about how the battle is going, what matters is how much of the enemies life bar your attacks take away and how much dps you do (which you can see), not the numeric value of every single hit. Disregard witches, aquire currency.

" They did an awesome job on the floating combat text in D3 imho. The numbers size and duration of the damage numbers are just perfect and don't distract from the action, but give you a good indicator of how much damage you're actually dealing in order to compare weapons/abilities. I'd love it if PoE implemented this. |

ardikus, how do you know the D3 damage numbers don't distract from the action when you have never seen a high level character with mighty aoe skills in d3?

All the effects are clear as day, I don't understand why you need to see how much damage you do

" I see what you're saying. I guess it's just a matter of preference; some people like to visually see how much damage they are dealing with each hit, while others find it too distracting. |

If floating text clogs up the screen, they could always add a combat log next to the chat window that would display some damage there. It could just be an optional tab so it wouldn't get in anyone's way. I don't really mind not seeing my numbers though.

It's a different genre, obviously, but floating damage works really well in Team Fort 2. Having it as an option would be fantastic!

I think I initially voted against floating damage numbers, actually.
I've been going over some D3 footage, and they DID do a pretty phenomenal job on that, and I might have changed my mind. At the same time, especially when grouping, I can see it becoming a distraction or breaking immersion. I guess in a perfect world, we'd have floating damage as a toggle. Turn it on or off. In the case of PoE, I realize there are priorities, and spending a large amount of time developing an effect that half of the player base will turn off isn't high up on the list. Still, would be a nice option. |
