Floating damage numbers

It's been brought up SO MANY TIMES.

The purpose of argument should not be victory, but progress.
Yeah I'm pretty sure there was a poll about it pre-alpha in the Dev Discussion forum.
I'd very much like to see damage numbers on screen. The extra feedback would be useful to test out different weapons/skills/accuracy setups.

To keep things from getting too busy:
-Just one number for each hit, perhaps color-coded to the most prevalent non-physical damage included (e.g. a 100physical+10cold+5fire hit would be show up blue, physical-only would be white, etc.)
-Show crits with a slightly bigger number or maybe some symbol around the number
-Show misses as MISS or whatnot
-Not sure if showing DOT effect damage (e.g. burning) would get too busy; probably not as things tend to die quickly
-Not sure if I'd like to see incoming damage numbers; useful in its own way but more likely to get in the way of gameplay I think
Haan - 2-handed mace Marauder
I think numbers are great, and they definitely help add a feel that a character is getting more powerful as they progress.

It'd be especially useful for looking at how upgrades affect your damage output, etc.

At the same time, however, I feel like they'd hurt PoE's atmosphere almost too much. You'd certainly loose immersion.

I know the Character UI is still being developed, so I'm guessing some of the information that would be gleaned from floating numbers would be more obvious in a new iteration of that UI than it is now.

Also, floating numbers might give us more information about mobs than GGG wants to give us. I mean, we can get a concrete sampling of damage reduction ratios of mobs by comparing the damage we do to them in the same gear/set-up. For instance, if most mobs take 10 damage, and the crabs only 3 from a single attack, we have hard numbers on the crab's DR. GGG may want the player to have to "figure" that out in a more visceral, experience-based way. I don't know.

So, I'm ultimately in two minds about it. It has benefits and costs to it.
Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow,
Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow.
None has ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master:
His songs are stronger songs, and his feet are faster.
Wouldn't bother me if it were optional.

Preferably off by default.

I couldn't find any thread on forum about this and if it exists i'm sorry to repost.

I have seen at least five threads like this in the last two weeks. :)
Here's my opinion on this:

You are hitting dozens of enemies at once in this game all the time.
My ranger is nowhere near perfectly equipped but I already fire 5 arrows 2.6 times a second (which pierce and hit more than 5 enemies). Witches can shock nova the whole screen two times a second, often more than 50 enemies at once. If you'd see the damage numbers on the screen, you would see nothing but numbers. Sure, I have nothing against an option to turn these on, but I am sure nobody will have this enabled in the later stages of the game. Besides, it provides zero additional information about how the battle is going, what matters is how much of the enemies life bar your attacks take away and how much dps you do (which you can see), not the numeric value of every single hit.

It worked fine for borderlands, and you could have an SMG that fired four bullets at once at 15 rounds per second.

Yeah but you couldn't really see the numbers that well with a Double Anarchy haha. It was more of a visual effect than a source of information.

I would love to see this as a UI option, disabled by default to keep the immersion for people that don't want it. Personally I like seeing my damage, helps show how much my gear is improving me.

Pretty much this.

I'd like it as an option, but I understand how some would find it irritating.
"You'd take a eunuch like me?"
I think the Floating combat text would clutter up the screen pretty heavily in some areas. Especially for people who use AoE(Everyone?). I wouldn't mind seeing a combat log though, it would provide the same insight, would stay on screen longer, and less clutter. The best option would be is if it was implemented to have it disabled by default.
