Vaal Pact - How does this keystone work?

Yes.

When you do life leech without Vaal Pact, you get the life back over time. (At a rate of 20% of your maximum life per second)

With Vaal Pact, this is instant. You will want to have life leech if you choose this keystone, as it does not grant you any additional leech.

As well, you no longer gain life from life flasks, nor does any life regen apply.

It can be combined with Ghost Reaver, in which case the ES you gain from leech will apply instantly, rather than over time.

I'm still wondering how ghost reaver even made it into the game with how absurdly powerful it is...

What makes it more powerful than regular life leech that restores HP?
Going Vaal pact and ghost reaver leeching ES isn't much different than just leeching life. In both cases you lose the ability to use life flasks. But the advantage that ES has is it automatically regenerate after a couple of seconds. With just life using Vaal Pact, you will never regain/recover life unless you leech it.

The best way (in my opinion) is to use Ghost Reaver and Vaal Pact with CI. That way you have a huge ES pool and you suffer no negatives with Vaal Pact. Basically means instantly recover ES with life leech. I say it's perfectly fine since hp builds can regen/life leech/heal with flask while ES builds can't recover ES except to run away and not get hit for a couple seconds.
Alone, loosing completely the ability to use flasks renders this passive completely useless imho. Now in addition it also cancels all regeneration...I fail to see really how this could even be considered in any serious build.

For one, flasks not only provide health, but also have additional buffs (resist, armor, etc...during flask duration).

So we have a passive here which is quite costly in terms of points to reach and which has more disadvantages than benefits.

Please make this more useful, for example instead of nullifying completely the regen and flasks to have a reduced effect by x% something like:

Spoiler

Life Leech applies instantly
Life recovery from Flasks and Regeneration is reduced by x%.

Bumping this thread for clarification. This is what answer i've been looking for actually.

So creating a build with CI + Ghost reaver + Vaal pact, will help you replenish your ES fast but not be able to use any kind of life regeneration (Zealot's Oath included).
However, with this build i can still recover my ES if i wait away from battle right? Or using Vaal pact would prevent ES default recovery while inactive?

I am a CI + Ghost Reaver Shadow, and I can confirm that ES still regenerates out of battle. Personally, what others are saying is correct. Without VP, I would die anywhere, life leech does't heal fast enough.
Uhh... am I the only one not stupid? Did anyone else try this before posting 4 pages of replies? Flasks ABSOLUTELY work with this keystone.. You regain life upon flask use every single time. Just no life regen.... you all fail.
I mean really, 4 pages? seriously? I have no idea what I a saying, let me chime in...
Once upon a time there was a time when Vaal Pact would not let you heal up using FLASKS and regens. Now you can use flasks to heal up but with Vaal Pact being much less effective.

Pretty sad you had to say that when this thread was made back in 2012. -_-
Sometimes you can take the game out of the garage but you can't take the garage out of the game.
