Hacked Accounts

I'm confused how people get targeted for these hacks. How does someone go to the trouble of "I'm gonna monitor Joeys email and when Joey logs in ill try joeys password in path of exile and hope he plays and has loot!" It just seems like a lot of work! How are people targeted? Sure a streamer, but joe blow? How does joe blow get picked?

If anything they appear to not be targeted.

Alternatively, anyone that felt like running a keylogger thinking it was a maphack would be susceptible, as would Joe Blow who happened to reuse the same password and account name here that they did on LoL (or some other game/community that has had their db hacked and lost all their credentials), as would others for reasons not listed.

It's much more likely, given the number of people hacked as a proportion of the game population, that every case was due to some user problem.

You might not get the point. He says that, and then, because it's more likely, he states it like a fact and rubs people's faces in it. That's all.

Edit: His last post actually came off a lot more fair. Had it been that way the whole time, perhaps this discussion wouldn't have become so heated.

That does not say that's what was happened without any doubt. If GGG's explanations applied to you, then case closed, if not, then please contain your emotions until more evidence comes out.

The differences are:

1) You're making your points in a logical manner, without doing what I just described above (and before the subsequent edit).

2) I wasn't hacked. I didn't lose any items. I'm just afraid of the possibilities, given what I hear, and for one person to flat-out and rudely deny that maybe there's more to it than his probabilities suggest (even though his probabilities may be sound), is IMO an ignorant move, and if it's not countered it could lead to more serious issues (loss of legitimate players, not catching a legitimate client issue, etc).

In the future, don't reply to these kind of posts nor assume they represent the community or anyone other than the person who wrote them at the time they wrote them.

At the same time, a heated argument takes two people, and there is always a time and a place to defuse.

GGG doesn't need defending. I'm sure they're completely aware of the gravity of the situation. They can speak for themselves, and they can (and are) working, foolproofing, and fixing security.
man im just dissapointed at how the community has responded to this man, ppl that got hacked lost their valuables, and the people who did not has done nothing but point fingers at the hacked accounts saying its their fault they have been hacked, it is like getting kicked in the face when someone punched you in the nuts and u fell to the ground.

i do hope that the community can get better and show more empathy towards the victims of these malicious hackers. I also do hope that GGG comes out with an authenticator so this will never happen again. After all this is beta right? We're here to live and learn.

??? I didn't think he represented the community. However...

Yes, you are absolutely right. My apologies on that; I didn't need to get so drawn in. Besides, he may have been right the whole time, for all I know. I probably should have stayed out. I tend to do that sometimes, let my emotions get all feeling like I need to defend someone when others might just watch from afar. It's hard to judge the best course of action in those kinds of situations.

Until we know the facts, and possible we never will, it *can* happen like this:

You go to a website about PoE and it wants you to create an account. You use the same email that you use for your PoE account and, hopefully not!, the same password as your PoE account. That site gets hacked or it was setup for the sole purpose to datamine accounts knowing that the people creating accounts are the same ones playing PoE. Either way, the "hacker" now has a lot of email address and passwords to try and log into PoE with. If it finds a match, you're hacked.

This is generally the case. How it happens is varied, but wherever there are security measures in place, there are those with nefarious intentions to try to break those measures for their own gain.

Again, in this case, that's the assumption. It's possible, however unlikely, GGG did or does have some loophole they don't know about and that's what's happening. I don't believe this but there are plenty who do, obviously.

I completely agree on both your points. The callousness of some of these posts are just disappointing. But really, that's the internet. There are plenty who do feel for those who lost stuff, but they're the silent majority. They don't post because, what can they contribute to the conversation aside from saying "Sorry man" which is nice but not really constructive.
Today my account was hacked...I stopped playing for 6 hours to do some other stuff and when I came back all my good stuff was gone from all my characters and stash. No, I dont use or never used any kind of third person software. I've spent a freaking lot of hours on this game, trying hard to farm and trade, and now I have no reason to keep playing. Thank you for making me waste my time in such an unsatisfactory and frustrating way, GGG. Way to go.
To the people that got hacked, I'm offering assistance it kinda does require a bit of trust. more details in this thread. I'm not requiring any one to send me their report file, but I offer to go over it for you for no charge.
