Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games
hi GGG and players
just a short story told by a movie director (Lloyd Kaufman) while in my youth i was a journalist : - a director and producer are lost in the desert. then at some point they see what looks like an oasis. An oasis it is. The director bend over to reach the water to drink it but the producer stops him. The director stays shock " but why" and the producer answers :" let me piss in it first". some people are great to create, create is a life impulse. some people are good with money, money is a symbol of death. if they were the same, we shouldn't have 2 different words for them. as an owner my own company, i've been approached by people congratulates me for my amazing job and my results, and the quality of my work. the only thing i've seen so far, is, that after the nice introduction, you understand that they just want "the money" brought by your business and they think they already know better than you how to do your work. I do hope for GGG that you do the right choice and you can keep your freedom. Good luck, i'll keep playing but probably won't "support" the game with money anymore. I wonder what will happen to the devs that put so much work into making this the greatest ARPG to ever exist.
I hope they find happiness in life and keep creating amazing games because that's very rare in the current years. |

" Dude... things are not yet that desperate... I'm actually kinda surprised by the intensity of the negative here. I mean, yes, Tencent are basically the EA of China, but they've been much more careful about their moves internationally, at least so far. I mean, Epic Games (Fortnite), Riot Games (League of Legenda), and Supercell (Clash of Clans) all have Tencent as a major investor, and none of those developers seems to be in the process of an EA-style burn-out. Tencent just have money to spend, and a desire to be a global brand, rather than just a Chinese one... and, frankly, EA and Activision/Blizzard could do with a real competitor who might actually do things differently. Plus, GGG have always had VC investors. Yes, our MT purchases went a long way to helping make the game what it is, and I understand that a lot of folks feel both emotionally and financially invested, but we were never GGG's only source of funds. And, honestly, I'm a lot more concerned with GGG's near-total capitulation to the clear-speed-meta imperative, and the fact that all builds are now AoE spellcasters, then I am about the fact that Tencent now own a majority stake in the company. Now, I will be less likely to buy new supporter packs and such, going forward, but that has more to do with the fact that the game's meta is being increasingly homegeneous and stale, and not so much because Tencent is taking a cut of the proceeds. As long as the news page continues to feature actual news about the game, though, and isn't just a parade of MT announcements... well, I think that the team at GGG have been good enough to their community for enough years now to have earned a little benefit of the doubt. Stay sane, exiles!

Hope PoE doesn't get a cosmetic mtx game(like 1 armor set every week or saturated with these), or with tons of lootboxes, it has already to many imo

I would have to expect if everyone stopped buying MTX then they would simply convert the game to a pay to play. For me their wouldnt be much difference as the only think I buy is tabs (for support and functionality) but how would you all feel if it became a monthly fee game?

" And that is exactly why you SHOULD be afraid. Lots of supporters will no longer be supporting the game because of this move. Which COULD have the effect of Tencent trying to force GGG to do something horrible to try to make more money. It's generally what happens when you get higher up execs that only are in it for the money. |

LOL nothing will change bullshit. Like I never heard that before.
Whatever; could be bad could be good. They acquired stake in the company until the initial terms are up. Who fucking really knows what will happen. Maybe for gods sake it will mean map mods won't break builds for fucking crying out load. Last edited by TheLockedGuy#0038 on May 21, 2018, 7:00:42 PM

" I agree this is a vicious circle, but you would have to blame the community as much as GGG if this was the outcome. |
