Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

I have a lot of thoughts around this announcement, so wanted to write them down to organise them:

1) 11 years of awesomeness deserves thanks. Thank you so much, you GGG champions.

2) Path of exile is currently the best game in existence. We know it, why wouldn't investors know it?

3) If GGG makes a lot of money, they have set the blueprint for dozens of similar games to follow suit. As a fan, I like this possibility. If you believe in market forces, you might see this as insurance that the game stays good, where currently there is not much competition.

3) 20 million sign ups and 2 million active users is a drop in the bucket of where digital entertainment is headed. The trend is that gaming and digital goods have outperformed movie and T.V studios (in gross value of the global market) for many years. Games are getting better, so people are choosing to spend more time on them. Almost all projections show the job market shrinking and leisure time, plus lifespan increasing. A game like path of exile could become the equivalent of an English Premier League (the soccer/football franchise supported across the world).

When I think of a future like this, I don't think about the money or the parent company. I think about a grandparent playing this game with their grandkids. Of schools using this game to to make learning fun, as happens regularly with minecraft. Of funny youtubers who currently have 15K viewers having 1.5 million viewers and becoming stars. Of POE tournaments held in stadiums, like League of legends currently is. Or Virtual Reality technology combining with games like this in a new form of exercise. I guess a 520 billion U.S.D. company is necessary for scenarios like this to be viable.

One question. Usually being acquired or creating a partnership with a company is done when you are in need. If you were doing good on your own why the need of doing that.

These people are the same sheep they claim anybody who isn't with them supposedly are, except they would rather scream about how anything that changed instantly gets ruined because it's not something that appeals to them. The David vs Goliath era is long over, I want to see the games I play survive and thrive even if it means external investments are needed to make improvements. I reiterate, I'll vote with my damn wallet if this game goes down the tubes, but until then I feel that the players should set examples by giving the company which they supported for so long the benefit of the doubt until the changes actually negatively impact gameplay. And no, this doesn't mean whining about the lab or how xbox was going to kill creativity, because neither of those two things have to my knowledge occurred so far.

Too many extreme leftist SJW all around, I agree with you sir, sadly the sane people tend to keep quiet. I bet most of the doomsayers have never worked for a company that goes through such transition to even understand the benefits of this. Better production, better service, etc. They want extensive Testing, while thinking that this is free, they want better customer service and think it is also free. I don't get it why do people feel entitled to everything...?
April Fool's? No, todays date is May 21 !! :(
GGG buffed??
POE nerfed??
Path of Tencent??

I hope this is not end of ORIGINAL POE!!
Chris and the GGG team, I hope this works out as well for you and GGG as you hope that it does. Tencent's track record is abysmal though, and most of us are not optimistic that your vision will endure through their (majority) ownership and its model of squeezing every cent out of customers in a pay-to-win fashion.

Congrats on your new funding source, and hopefully it makes up for the hundreds or thousands of us that bought supporter packs and cosmetics to support PoE and GGG, but will never spend another cent if it supports Tencent.
How incredibly disappointing. I thought you were better than this.

I won't be going out of my way to support the game anymore.

Also, don't straight-faced lie about retaining control. The rest of that PR-laden spiel wasn't much better, either.

Lets just keep calm folks. I am sure that GGG wouldn't take a deal like this without expressing and legally handling the concerns that we all have about a major share investment from china. GGG has continuously proven their intentions to the community throughout the years and i will trust them.

I think they took this deal because they want the money to expand their team significantly for the 4.0.0 expansion.

I am not sure, if you can call GGG independent, if Tencent has a share of 80%!

But: I would worry way more, if EA or Ubisoft is the investor.
To the Tencent imperium belong games like Fortnite, League of Legends, etc which are known as fair F2P. So i don't worry about the investment.

Keep up the good work. We will see, what the future brings. If its bad, people will quit or playing diablo 4. If its good, everthing is fine.
