[3.10] Gryph's Volatile Dead Necromancer || Fun, Medium Budget, Tanky, Millions of DPS

Thanks for your super fast update.

What would be the best unique weapon for the build? Pledge of hands is slightly better than martyr of innocence right?

Are you sure than CWC as a mod on a rare is still available?

Pledge of hands doesn't really work for us as CWC. Even as self cast I tested it and it was far to slow. Felt terrible.

They specifically singled out the hybrid Damage+Support Gem mods because of how powerful they are. This only effects Power Charge on Crit and Arcane Surge support modifiers on staves as those have spell damage attached to them.

Martyr is the best "cheap" unique staff. You can also opt to dual wield or 1H+Shield instead of using a staff. Staves give access to very potent crit nodes in the tree and the 7th link. That's their main draw.

That said...

Duskdawn is strong (but also more expensive) and it doesn't even come close to the damage output of Marty of Innocence.

Soulwrest is a fun option that gives you a small army of minions and some free life regen.

That's about it though.

The patch note says: Hybrid Physical Damage and Support/Spell Damage and Support modifiers can no longer roll on two-handed weapons.

So the hybrid Physical Damage and Support is gone, but also the support one. Right?
Meaning CWC staves are gone.

Edit: Great news, a mod on the subreddit helped me read it right. It's the "/" that separate the two proposisions.

So the modifiers that take the form of "%increased physical damage + socketed gems are supported by X" as well as "%increased spell damage + socketed gems are supported by X" are gone from two-handed weapons. But the non hybrid mod are still here!

Yes, that what I was saying. Haha. You can still get Cast While Channeling Support, but no longer PCoC Support/Increased Spell Damage.

Losing PCoC as an option isn't even that detrimental. It represented 12-20% more damage for this build and easy power charge generation. We can still get the power charges with the spell crit shaper mod and the more damage can be made up for with the bolstered spell damage prefix and/or the Aetheric Fossil mod for 20% more spell damage with sockets skills.

Losing the 20% double damage mod is a pretty big loss though. Still, I was up to 1.6 Million damage per ball ... so, even with all the nerfs the damage output will be fine. Crafting a really good staff will harder sadly.
This might be a big ask, but for noob like me would be huge help

Basic lootfilter for leveling, to find links etc, something like this possible?

Maybe even like, early-mid-late versions

I just use neversinks. You can customize it easily at filterblade. (Just search for it)
i noticed on the leveling build, you go heavy for minion dmg, does that scale VD damage aswell?

I start it at level 16 when I can use desecrate + spell cascade + Arcane Surge on a 3L. faster Casting on an eventual 4L.

You can use it sooner than that with Unearth, but it wont feel as good.

Hey Gryph, first of all thank you very much for your work! I am really sad i didn't try the build last season but i am more than interested to try this build as a league starter for 3.9.

Due to the fact that i am quite the noob regarding PoE i am very interested in more information on the levelling section.
Am i right in thinking that the 4 link setting you mention is meant to work in combination with a manual cast of VD ?

I guess you'd then support VD with concentrated effect, inspiration and elemental focus in another 4L ?

And as soon as available go for the auras as well?

May sound stupid for you but I'm just trying to figure out what brings me best to lvl 65-70 until I'm able to get Scold's to shift to Cyclone and CWC...

I hope that makes sense for you :-)

Did a test run to find some combinatiions.

Leveling
Early // Freezing Pulse, Explosive trap into SRS minion damage, melee splash.
Mid // Incinerate, Faster Casting, Combustion + something if 4L
Late // Incinerate, Volatile Dead, Descecrate, Cast While Channeling,

Farm a Tabula with last setup in Blood Aquaducts.

Decent setup, pretty fun.

My plan is to level to 16 with Freeze Pulse, Frost Bomb, and Explosive Trap. I might throw something else into the mix like SRS. From there I will go with VD with the following two 3L setups (working into 4L), also note some of the supports aren't available until 18:

Desecrate - Spell Cascade - Arcane Surge - (4th) Faster Casting

Volatile Dead - Spell Cascade - Conc Effect - Combustion

Herald of Ash @ 16

Anger/Zealotry after completing normal Lab for Essence Glutton

A couple of thoughts:

-Make sure arcane surge is kept low enough level so that Desecrate triggers on each cast.

-Spell Cascade on VD may be dropped for more individual ball damage. This also allows for less alternating button-pressing. Desecrate - VD - VD - VD - Desecrate vs Desecrate - VD - Desecrate. This is mostly a preference thing.

I like just using VD - Spell Cascade - Conc Effect - Combustion as a 4L, rather than use Incinerate+CWC. Still have to stop to cast Desecrate so this works better IMO. That said, use whatever you're comfortable with; I didn't go too deep into the leveling methods after all.

Spiritual Aid makes all minion damage scale as generic damage, so yes it scales VD. We get a good chunk of minion damage incidentally in our Ascendancy, so picking up SA is very efficient.
