The Holy Trinity of ARPGs (Torchlight, Diablo, and Path of Exile)
Ooh and tommerbob's thumbs up too. Killer thread, this.
If I may chime in re: cosmetic gear -- I actually think the 'vanilla' gear models right now are very appropriate to the setting as we've seen it thus far. I wouldn't expect to find blazing greatswords of uberness in Wraeclast, even though I can probably make a sword that does that sort of thing with work. As much as I want particle effects of the weapons, I'd hate to see everyone in town with flaming blades and glowing wands. As one person pointed out to me while I was afk this weekend: isn't that bright bird just a little out of character? Aye, it is, which is why I assume the characters can't actually see it. This comes back to the dual layer of gaming that I think PoE is going to have to tread: what the players see won't always fit with what the characters might. Anyway, I quite like the base models of the game and in no way want to detract from the art department's hard work there. But I do acknowledge that the room for improvement should be reserved for the cash shop. re: Grim Dawn -- wiki's release date is August 2013. I don't think we can discuss that with the same certainty as we can these three games, all of which I expect to see 'released' in 2012. And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

" August next year? Ouch... sorry, I heard it was supposed to be released August this year initially, but was pushed back to early next year. Oh, well. It'll definitely be worth the wait. Speaking of waiting, Diablo 3 is officially released. But you can't play it, naturally. Or you can, excelt "The servers are busy". Not sh*t. Hehe. "And that's how you die properly, sailor boy."

It was to be expected.
I wouldn't be surprised if Diablo 3 had the largest amount of launch log-ins of any game ever created. ''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer.'' IGN: Vaeralyse Last edited by Tagek#6585 on May 14, 2012, 5:21:51 PM

" Can't wait to read some reviews. Still haven't watched all the cinematics yet, either. But back to TL2, because I feel we should discuss it a bit more. It's relatively new territory for this thread and I think much belatedly so. One of the things I loved/hated about TL1 was the feel of combat. On one hand, you had pretty cartoony designs (Dungeon Runners immediately came to mind), on the other, when you whacked things, the sound was really chunky. I didn't often feel like I was slicing through things so much as ramming my sword into them and this collision somehow resulted in some serious impact. But the game played and plays like a super-smooth Diablo 2.5 in a Diablo 1.5 setting, which was always a winner for me. It looks like TL2 is carrying this feel of combat through, which worked the first time, so why not, eh? And from what I can tell, it's definitely closer to D3 than PoE, although which influenced which is always up for debate. Like I said, it's love/hate for me. I liked the meatinessa as a Destroyer but as a vanquisher or alchemist, sometimes it felt a bit overdone. I'm also glad to hear the story is much expanded. I was sadly totally uncompelled by TL1's story...I loved the simplicity of returning to a familiar trope: a town sitting on top of a hell mouth (be it called Sunnydale, Tristram or Torchlight), but from there it was all pretty disconnected. For a single player only game, that was a misstep in my opinion. And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

" Regarding TL2, I hope it's less boring than the first game. The first game was solid, loved a lot of things in it, problem was, it got boring/repetitive. Fast. I am currently giving it a second (third or fourth in reality) try and enjoying myself a little bit more, but it's more due to me keeping myself going, rather than the game doing it. Hopefully TL2 will fix this. If it does I will buy it. |

" I do apologize for omitting them, but it's mostly because a) they aren't even in Alpha yet and b) aren't due for release anytime in 2012. As the focus of my post was around the three looming heavy hitting arpgs coming out this summer, I narrowed my focus. It's not because I don't think Grim Dawn won't be great, I just don't have any information to honestly critique it like I have the other 3 games that were all (or are) in beta. According to a reply I got from Runics lead writer JD Wiker, there's a lot of fine tuning and tweaking to be done, story wise. You can see my thread here http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=24002 and his responses start here http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=24002&start=20#p219674

Never understood the love for Torchlight, specially when some of its fans are the same people who moan that D3 is to cartoony. Honestly the setting sucked, the gameplay was balanced badly, loot sucked and was uninteresting, there wasn't even a pretence of plot... etc etc
It was repetitive to the point of nausea imho Of the 3, D3 looks the best by a long chalk, but POE is firmly second, T2 looks pretty bland and mediocre by comparison. Doesnt have the style or identity of POE and doesnt have the panache and polish of D3. |

" Don't get me wrong, I dislike the cartoony graphics of Torchlight as well. However, it has other things going for it over D3 - offline and LAN play, support for mods, no RMAH, and it's cheaper. As to a Diablo clone being repetitive... that's just a part of the genre. :D What have you become when even nightmares fear you?
