The Holy Trinity of ARPGs (Torchlight, Diablo, and Path of Exile)

Never understood the love for Torchlight, specially when some of its fans are the same people who moan that D3 is to cartoony. Honestly the setting sucked, the gameplay was balanced badly, loot sucked and was uninteresting, there wasn't even a pretence of plot... etc etc

It was repetitive to the point of nausea imho

Of the 3, D3 looks the best by a long chalk, but POE is firmly second, T2 looks pretty bland and mediocre by comparison. Doesnt have the style or identity of POE and doesnt have the panache and polish of D3.

Listen here, Torchlight has it's own distinct visual style, nothing wrong with that.

Diablo 1 and 2 both had a distinct visual style that created certain expectations for Diablo 3, which were not met because the developers thought WoW-s visual style beats all and went with that.

Very nice writeup. In my view, I'm eagerly anticipating all three of these games and can't wait to play them all.

offline and LAN play, support for mods, no RMAH, and it's cheaper.

As to a Diablo clone being repetitive... that's just a part of the genre. :D

None of those things bother me, as for being repetitive let me put it another way. It was repetitive by ARPG standards...

That's cool, broseph, that's a completely valid opinion. To be fair, though, there's a good chance that TL2 will be better than the first part - I hear they're planning a lot more content, more interesting classes etc.

Myself, I'll be focusing on PoE, but I'm not completely writing off TL2 just yet. :)

It looks cool.

My only beef with it so far is that the skill tree looks boring beyond belief, and the UI is terrible.
But I'm sure the UI will be fixed before launch.. the trees however.. I sure hope so.

This is a great writeup- the best I have seen. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to do this.

I will be focusing on PoE I think. I was disappointed with D3s art style- it just didn't seem true to the franchise. I like PoE character development more as well, so far. In my opinion, D3 smacks of a stopgap between WoW and the next Blizzard mmorpg. It just didn't seem to get the attention and development it deserved.
Fantastically written, approval from me.

On another note, I think I am mostly likely going to play PoE, mostly because its the most unique out of the three (multiple currency's, passive skill tree, etc.)
Okay, now I've played a bit of the TL2 beta, I can give a little feedback. Just a little.

For the most part, Brixtan's write-up remains very hard to dispute. I'm not sure I can imagine Walt Disney being overly impressed with the palette and visuals, but it was a nice sentiment. The graphics are pretty much what I'd expect Torchlight 1 to look like if the hero had turned around and walked away from the town rather than stuck to spelunking.

The classes did nothing for me, but that's okay. I have a feeling that's where the mods will kick in, and hard.

It felt a bit strange to return to the (what is to me) archaic system of going online and then creating a game people could join (or not, as was the case with my habitual password creation) rather than the more streamlined 'online-only' PoE system, pinched from Guild Wars 1 shamelessly. There was a definite sense of isolation there, but I can't quite pin down how it made me really feel. Good, bad, or just even more nostalgic for D2 than PoE ever has. All three with a dollop of resignation, perhaps.

Smooth, smooth, SMOOTH gameplay. If we were to compare betas alone, I'd have trouble saying which out of D3 and TL2 played smoother. Moot point, really: they're both very slick gaming experiences.

I agree with Tagek regarding the skill sets of each class. Somehow they feel even more boring than TL1's to me. And this is where D3 would more than edge out TL2 for me in terms of character/class appeal. Yes, I have major, possibly irreconcilable issues with D3's skill system, but at least there's a great deal of variety to it as you progress. What was one skill becomes 2, and then 3, etc. We have discussed this ad nausuem. It does not appear that Torchlight 2 has any real skill modification with character progression. I may be very wrong and missed something crucial, but the skill tree looked very similar to TL1's in that regard.

While it is most definitely not the same game, I think Runic have ultimately played this one too close to the original in some key areas. The aforementioned skill set, the very familiar character models and the entire atmosphere have yet to really indicate to me this is something new in and of itself, rather than an extension of something old and beloved.

Still, extremely polished, great fun to play, just...not for me. I think I knew that the moment I saw gold drop. Too big a step backwards for me -- for me, however, not necessarily anyone else.
And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
epic review. From this it makes me want to really only try torchlight2. I am honestly a huge fan of story lines, and blizzard I am sure did well on that, but because it is diablo 3, I never played the first 2 and so I will be lost. However, I do want to play diablo 3, I am not ready to pay $60 for a digital copy, I will instead wait for the prices to drop on the hard copies, and grab one when it gets to $30-$20. I like blizzard, from them some of the most iconic gaming sensations have emerged, starcraft, DOTA, WOW, and diablo spawned a new genre. I think they are great with story, and that compels me, but I will bide my time to pay a lower price. Also, I'm a sucker for pre-rendered cinematics which blizzard does to a movie quality degree.

I think I will mainly play POE, give torchlight2 a whirl, and wait for diablo 3 to not be expensive as it is now and pick it up purely for the visual and story based entertainment.

Dota has nothing to do with Blizzard.

And Diablo III hard copies will never be 20-30$, they'll be sold out.
