I understand how frustrating it can be to lose a name that you liked. Unfortunately, character names are freed up automatically by our system if the account has not been logged into for 1 year. We're unable to manually release claimed names before that time, unless the owner gives up permission to do so.

If you would like us to look into changing a character's name, please send us an email at support@grindinggear.com with 2-3 names in order of preference incase the name you desire is taken.

Okay, but have you ever considered how much sense the whole unique name policy has? People who actually care about character names and "R"ole in "ARPG" are minority here, while majority view PoE as abstract sandbox for the most bizarre things one can come up with, and their characters are just an extension of their builds, reflected by "PogToxicRainBRRR" or "ExpodeyTeddyTotemie".

Names like these are never in short supply anyway, so why not allow people to just choose any name they want without restrictions? Probability of meeting your double in game or in trade is minimal, and from technical point of view, you probably have "real" unique character ID internally, and don't need their names to be unique for the system to function.

Is there any policy about people taking names and just parking them on L1 characters/placeholder accounts?

I wouldn't mind if they were in use/used as i've been away for 1+ years and that policy is fine, but it was annoying to find they are just placeholder characters to grab the name and not play.

I reached that conclusion because they're both L1/2, The accounts have never listed an item for trade and have never posted on the forums. The accounts are private so i dont know what the other characters are, so could be possible they are active some other way.

barring that, is it possible to find out how long ago these placeholder character/accounts were created so i can just take the names back at a later date?
