Niche? Sure.
But you forgot to account for increased golem buff effect.
Before nerf you could stack 800+% which would be 40+% phys damage reduction. That is huge.

As i play more seldom nova days i do get a bit surprised by how much damage some mobs do, like in white tier maps those blue ghoulish naked mobs from act 3 who run super fast (i think ggg increasing mob speed from patch to patch btw) like ghouls from fallout 4 and start vail and spin arms at you at lightning speed deleting hp pool at 5k hp per second (few of them to be fair). But knowing all the tools to mitigate damage its probably fair, probably.
