(Solved) Frequent total display crashes caused by Path of Exile
Edit: I believe I've solved this. I dug into Event Viewer and saw that there was a voltage error being thrown by the GPU at the start of every crash. After replacing my PSU I am no longer crashing (so far anyway, fingers crossed). I'm still not sure why the problem was limited to only PoE at first, but after it spread to some other software (after a week of it only affecting PoE) I realized it had to be something else. So, sorry for blaming the game for this.
To preface, this has been occurring at least since Wednesday, December 13th (possibly the day before) but was not happening before then. This was not occurring around league launch (Dec 8th-11th), and I have played every day of the current league. So I suspect this issue was caused by one of the post 3.23 launch patches. The crashes will cause all connected displays on the PC to lose signal completely. There is no way to restore display functionality without forcing a hard reboot. Sound keeps playing, although strangely for PoE specifically it sounds more like a loop of recent sounds, rather than ongoing sounds. But something like Spotify will continue to play in the background without issue. Discord voice also cuts out after about 5-10 seconds. These crashes only occur with Path of Exile open. I have tested several other games for hours on end with the same additional apps running in the background with no issues whatsoever. The timing of the crashes is completely inconsistent. Sometimes the crashes have hours between them, sometimes minutes. The crashes have occurred in all of the following scenarios (and more): -In town -Idling in hideout -In a map -In a loading screen -Less than 3 seconds into the GGG logo splash screen upon launching the game. This was initially happening on Windows 10. I have since completed a clean install of Windows 11 on a new drive, with a fresh installation of both Steam and Path of Exile, and the issue remains, no difference. I have tried DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and Vulkan, with no difference. I have tried nearly every reasonable combination of Graphics Options configurations with no difference. The severity and frequency of these crashes not only kills my enjoyment of the game, but I worry is potentially harmful to my PC. GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900 X RAM: 16GB DDR4-3200 OS: Windows 11 (clean install, same issue was present on Windows 10 & 11) Edit: it crashed again less than 2 minutes after submitting this (and less than one minute after launching the game, while in Hideout interacting with my stash). Update: I saw some people reporting they were not crashing when they turned off the Discord overlay. I tried this, and also tried with Discord not running at all, and it made no difference - still crashing. Bumping and updating:
I have tried running Path of Exile with nothing else running, just Steam and PoE - still crashing. I have tried under-volting my GPU - still crashing. I have tried underclocking my GPU - still crashing. I have run GPU benchmark stress test tools at their highest settings for extended durations - no issues. At this point I've eliminated virtually every other possibility. I know the issue is caused by Path of Exile. The crashes have been steadily increasing in frequency as well. For the last couple of days I can't even complete a single map without crashing. |

same problem here, display driver crashes every now and then but in my case it restores so i dont have to do a reboot. couldnt find much on the internet to solve the problem. tried to increase TdrDelay and TdrDdiDelay to 60 seconds in the registry to not have the display driver crash after the default 2 seconds of unresponsiveness. all it did though is that the game freezes for 60 seconds now before it crashes anyway.
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Super - latest drivers / happened on the previous driver aswell running the game on dx12 beta because vulcan is now unplayable for me, thanks to all the performance "increasing" updates. Last edited by Zukaly#6986 on Dec 19, 2023, 10:27:34 PM

I too have this issue and it seems to be only localized to Path of Exile. I'll post an edit if I end up finding a solution.
Windows 10 i9-9900K 3070 - latest drivers/happened on old ones as well Running dx12 in game. |

This was also my issue. Seems my PSU fan died at some point and POE2 was the only game that I was running that would cause the psu to overheat.
This was confirmed with leaving the case open with a fan pointing directly at the psu while the game was running. 0 crashes in 3 days. Thank you for the idea. |
