The End of the Line

After 10+ years, 15k+ hours, and however many hundreds of dollars, I am done with Path of Exile. I've uninstalled PoE, PoB, and Awakened Trade. I've deleted my PoE bookmarks and item filters. I've removed PoE 2 from my Steam wishlist. I don't know when the new league comes out or the announcement or even what the name is. And I don't particularly care. That was my realization. I just . . . don't care about the game anymore. I care just enough to say goodbye to the past 10 years and explain why I'm done and that's it.

1. The campaign is a chore -- We've been playing 3.XX for 7 (!!!) years now with very little change. For the past few leagues, it's taken me multiple days to get through the campaign. I'm just so sick of it. I can't be bothered to do it again.

2. The change in league design philosophy -- I haven't enjoyed a league since Scourge. Coincidentally, that was the last league that had in-map mob density. That was 2.5 years ago. I don't know why PoE decided to move away from simple mob density leagues like Scourge, Legion, and Breach, but it's not a direction I enjoy or agree with.

3. Every change in 3.24 would have to be reverted -- I can't continue playing this version of PoE. I tried and tried and tried to enjoy 3.24, but it feels awful. From top to bottom, it feels so bad to play. Even early mapping, which was always one of the most gratifying parts of the game, feels weirdly hollow with the scarab and atlas changes. Everything would have to be reverted back to 3.23. Scarab rework, T17s, master missions, 5th map slot, Aisling, Hillock quality, Veiled Orbs, league mechanic on the atlas tree - All of it. I would even sacrifice the extra atlas trees just to go back to *any* earlier iteration of PoE. But I know that's not going to happen.

4. Neon -- I'm assuming that, since Chris has seemingly stepped back from GGG following the Archnemesis/Lake of Kalandra debacle, Neon has taken the reins of PoE 1. I am not a fan of this change. I can't remember which podcast it was, but I do remember Neon appearing on a podcast right before Exilecon 2019. "?!?!?!" was pretty much my expression throughout the podcast. I disagreed with everything he said. I don't remember exactly what he said, but I remember being baffled that he had become such a prominent member of the development team. With the reception to 3.24, I don't feel like I was wrong then nor do I feel wrong now. But, again, I don't expect this to change either. (Also, the 'I prefer bingo cards' comment left a really fucking bad taste in my mouth.)

So, that doesn't leave me much choice. It's either play a campaign I don't like, a version of the game I don't like, a league I probably won't like, and adhere to someone's vision of the game that I don't agree with. Or . . . Don't. I'm choosing the latter.

A million years ago, I had a relationship that reminds me of the past few years of PoE. Every couple of months, we'd have an argument and break-up, but we always got back together. Because, at the end of the day, we still loved each other. Then we had a massive blowout. After that, I knew we were done. As much as I loved her, there was no way the relationship could come back from that. I used to end my threats of quitting here on the forums and on Reddit with; "Anyways, see you guys next league." Because, at the end of the day, I still loved the game and I knew I wasn't actually quitting. I don't see any way back for me after 3.24.

Good luck with the next league and Path of Exile 2.

(in b4 "can i have your stuff" and "see you in two weeks")

I'm a big dumb dummy who has no self-control.

Best to move on given your state of mind over the game.
