Newer player, confused over new league changes

Greetings...
I wasn't really able to find new information regarding this.. so here goes.

I've only played for a short time now, this is the first new league start I have seen.
All my characters have been in the standard league so I didn't think the new league stuff was going to affect me. But when I logged in the other morning, I was kinda shocked to see the results. All my characters where offered a passive reset, which I declined. But one of my characters was reset completely. I also found that my progression in the Atlas was reset and no points or anything were refunded. Now, apparently, none of my stash of maps from before allow for progression? Even the one that looks like it should, Bone Crypt Map. I ran this and wasn't awarded a completion. So do I assume that all maps that I had before are no longer going to count for progression even though they work?
Not necessarily complaining, just confused and needing a little clarification.

This happens every new league.
The atlas has changed, you can get all your points back in standard by completing a corrupted t16 map from the previous league.
Understand the atlas and passive trees are difference, hence the reset there.
The one character reset completely, was likely a raider? in which that ascendency was removed, hence the reason for the reset.
unfortunately the impacts to standard are never announced or documented anywhere.

Thank you, I appreciate your response. I decided to play standard just trying to figure out this game. I must say that it is the most complex game I have ever played. Just when I start thinking I may have figured something out, I get a curve ball thrown at me.
The character I was playing that got the full reset was a RF Chieftain at lvl 77. It really would have been nice if I'd had some notice so I could have possibly mapped out all my choices on the tree. Oh well, live and learn.

Doing a lower than T16 rare corrupted map will refill your standard atlas all the way to one level below the map tier and give you the appropriate number of atlas points.

Previously completed unique maps auto complete without re running them. If you use pob, you can rebuild your RF from that.

Terrible system, but that's how it works. You need a corrupted legacy map if you want to get atlas points upto 1 level below that maps level.

Passive reset is fine, it helps people alter their build with incoming changes occurring, or let them try something different if they wish. You should not of had your character refreshed without confirming it though, that doesn't sound right. You should be able to just put the points back on though.

You can update your maps to the new ones if you wish to. Selling them to the vendor will swap them for an updated version.

Worst thing in the game in my opinion. No idea how you're supposed to just magically know this.

Yeah be thankful you didn't loose a whole atlas of ruthless progression, but still, very annoying.
