The power of REGEX on pc, over console?
So tonight I was helping a newer player with some info, another player added some info, the convo continued until....newer player was cautioned against following long term player build guides and not understanding that almost all use regex to improve their game play to the point of perfect rolled maps to that charc. That same player interjected with this: — Today at 8:42 PM
That's straight up BS dude. Regex is legit nothing else then a filter for stash [8:43 PM] Only thing to keep in mind is that most of his builds are meant for hardcore, so they sacrifice DMG for tank. I tyried to explain that I play both PC and console, that the pc experience with regex dwarfs console. I also point out that regex is so much more than just a stash tab filter. That the quality of life and ease of play is immeasurable. I even linked some vids of profit with regex and ingame mech regex uses.. then I just simplified the whole thing by pointing out that if you regex on console the whole string must be typed in manually each use and there is zero way to store. What are other players thoughts on the power of regex. Thanks Last bumped on Oct 4, 2024, 7:34:12 AM

I just think they need to update all the searching. If I want to search my stash for items with item level and or item level requirement, eg. lvl 0-16, it needs to be very simple and not a long string of regex, that requires a generator or knowledge of syntax. If I want to highlight all influenced items, it should be simple, etc. What they have created has been adequate over the years, but is no longer sufficient in my opinion. For multiple reasons. Technologies get better, the game gets more complex, etc.
The game does has a problem with it becoming less about in game and more about using increasingly sophisticated tools. I don't think there is a whole lot that can be done about that. I don't have a problem with people using regex to optimally speed run high level content of the game. What is a problem, is if these tools aren't adequate at the lower end and simple solutions don't get implemented because there is Band-Aid fix. Another example of this would be use of third party trade application that are much more advanced than the trade website. GGG seem to understand that the tools aren't the problem, but are a symptom of a larger problem. In this case that the base trading system is flawed. They made some adjustments to that this league. Maybe they can also improve the search functionality. People innovating with these things can often lead to overall improvement in the game. Perhaps this is showing that the search system needs an overhaul. If there was a more user friendly search system, like selecting tags, I think regex would still be used as an optimal solution, to have preloaded instantly and save time on use. The problem comes when the difference between using the optimal solution is far superior than the base design. Like being able to list items in bulk that cant be listed in bulk on the trade site. At that point it then needs to be looked at why there is such a gap. Instead of thinking using regex need to be nerfed, how can the game be improved in a way that players get closer to the functionality of regex, but in a much simpler implementation. Then if people want to go the extra yards to save a few seconds using regex, more power to them. Currently, what you are suggesting is the gap is much bigger than that and maybe shows that there needs to be some improvement in the core search mechanics. Yeah, it's great that (unlike other loot-heavy games), PoE1 does even have a stash search and even a regular expressions compatible one, but it still leaves a lot to be desired (and its implementation might be buggy ?)
This is why I'm pushing for an integration between stash search and loot filter (where you can use comparisons using >=< !) ("Why can my loot filter highlight a chroma vendor recipe item on the ground, but not on vendor's tab ??') Speaking of, do console versions even have loot filters ? And especially ones that you can modify rather than just the default one (not existing for Ruthless) ? P.S.: Also, removing the identification process for all but the rarest of items, so that loot filters can do this : https://forum.median-xl.com/viewtopic.php?t=83520 |

regex was added to console in 2021. It is beyond limited and the player has to be well educated on regex string. unlike pc you have no alternate window. you can play the game and thats it. if you wanna look a regex up you have to close the game compy the regex, start the game input regex. the biggest issue is that you have no copy, paste, clipboard or storing feature. so everything has to be done for each instance of use. its beyond being help full as the string inputs alone take so much time.

I like the highlight of the individual hit
