An idea for poe2 to get my thoughts out
Feel free to use this or not, I'm mainly just writing my thoughts down as it helps with organizing them (and something I could iterate on for my d&d game), but it'd be cool if it could also give some inspiration for the game. Obviously it'd be something for later, like a season/league mechanic foundation to work off of.
When the endgame presentation got to the point of talking about gear sockets and runes, the first thing that came to mind, and likely to many veteran d2 players, is rune words. With the limited slots in gear, the notion of rune word strings in a single item wouldn't work like they did in d2. Then how about rune words across all the combined gear sockets? If there's a base of 7-8 sockets across gear before vaal orbs (I couldn't tell if the belt will have one or not), then that's the space to work with for rune combinations. Another thing that came to mind is set items, which are likely impossible to implement with how poe works, but rune words could fulfill that concept in a way. As an example, the rune combos could be in tiers of like 3, 6, and 9, with each tier "set" giving 1 extra and more powerful effect. This implies only 3 and 6 word sets would be doable during the campaign (as far as I can tell, and presuming they'd even be available during the campaign), and you'd have to get at least 1-2 extra sockets from vaal orbs for the longer 9 word sets. Trying different rune combos to see if they have a set effect would be the fantasy dopamine hit - until they're figured out and shared between everybody anyways. Although with how easy it is to remove and replace runes, there'd probably need to be one more control/bottleneck process to prevent checking every rune combo from the hoard in a stash until one hits. Like making an inserted rune set permanent in the gear, but an npc can remove them for a cost. Next thing to figure out is how runes for word sets would function with runes that would already be available in the game, since they'd be sharing the same socket mechanic space. But that's getting to a level of nuance that would just be endless speculation from me. Last bumped on Nov 29, 2024, 1:16:15 AM

It’s a cool idea but would very very quickly become something the community knew and just did.
If the runes changed each league/season for new ones it would be fun each time to work out what the new combos were, but this is a lot of work for GGG so I don’t expect it. |
