Alternative use of weapon swap passive points

The use case GGG presented for the weapon set specific passive points is that during combat you can quickly swap between 2 different loadouts, each consisting of a weapon set and up to 24 passive points. The focus was on using different weapons and quickly swapping between them.

But if you don't need to swap quickly, you could also use this to have 2 differnt trees for, say, mapping and bossing. You can use the same weapon with different trees. All you have to do is move your weapon to the other weapon slot before you go into a boss arena, and switch back when you go back to mapping. This can save you lots of tedious and potentially expensive respecing.

I haven't scoured the forum/reddit/youtube to see if anyone else is doing this already (pretty sure there is), but I just wanted to get this out there. Maybe someone finds it useful.

Actually a very solid idea.
I'm steering clear of the whole weapon swapping as it doesn't allow me to also automatically have different skill bars, but just switching out passives for single target could be pretty darn useful.

Isn't a "no" better than an ignore?
Yes, interesting idea, didn't think about it. In general though, using separate weapon for the second tree looks more interesting and effective, unless you're low on ex and didn't find a suitable second weapon yet.
This is my current wand, pretty sure I'm not gonna be able to afford anything comparable anytime soon xD (got it off Gwennen, right out of her shop window. Just casually slammed the inc. lightning damage :)

Anyway, the idea came to me when I was planning a respec and was looking at a very powerful node that's pretty far away from the rest of my tree. I could put that node into my single target setup and use the points I need to path there differently for my mapping setup.

I don't really feel the need for a 2nd weapon slot with a different weapon type or anything. That might be just ignorance on my part though. I'm sure there are sick combos for my build that I'm not aware of...
i thought this was the idea to begin with, as in single target vs aoe.... what else would you use this for?
You could have one weapon set with cold for crowd control, and one with lightning for damage. Freeze everything first, then go for the kill. Or for melee: one for 2h weapon, one for 1h + shield when things get hairy. Another example they showed was 1 set for quarterstaff, to place tempest bell, 2nd set for rapid fire crossbow to shoot the bell.

Since in PoE2 most skills are bound to a specific weapon type, mixing them requires you to equip different weapons. That's how it was presented by GGG.

Sadly, it just doesn't work out that well.
We can't have skill bars autoswitch, and I can't even have 2 crossbows use the same left-click attack, or switch automatically when I select a specific bolt type - the switch will only happen when I try to fire that bolt. How the hell I managed to load it is anyone's guess.
Crossbows are especially clunky due to this, and the generally different feel of the skill just loading the bolt, so it bears some irony that the ascendancy depicted with a crossbow is also the one with extra weapon swap points.

I'd much prefer switching between two sets with X, then have different skills set for each set, than to have to share one skill bar for skills of two weapon types.
So the idea of just using the same everything with different passives is sound, as I can abide switching weapons manually for a boss fight.

Can you "pseudo" do it by having the same type of weapon and offhand?

Crossbow autos are a "weapon skill" so only from that weapon. However, with skills you can specify in the details of skill page at the bottom to only use skill with one weapon vs another and it will swap to that weapon.
