PoE2 Crafting Explained to Kids

Let's say you want to obtain a rare item, like a wand, with THREE statistics you care about, starting from a white item.

For example:

#% increased Spell Damage
# to Level of all Spell Skills
#% increased Cast Speed

The chances of getting the first desired stat are 1 in 81.

The chances of getting the second desired stat, after getting the first, are also 1 in 81.

The chances of getting the third desired stat, after getting the first and second, are still 1 in 81.

Let’s say you’re okay with not getting the maximum, so:

You’re okay with results in a lower range for "+ increased Spell Damage", for example, in the range of 90-104% instead of aiming for the range of 105-119%.

You’re okay with a lower range for "+ to Level of all Spell Skills", +3 is fine, no need for +4 or +5.

You’re okay with a lower range for "% increased Cast Speed", in the range of 25-28%, without aiming for 29-32% or 33-35%.

This reduces the possibilities:

Getting the first stat is 1 in 80
Getting the second stat is 1 in 79
Getting the third stat is 1 in 79

The chances of obtaining this item by crafting are therefore:
80×79×79


Which is


499280


These are the average attempts needed to get closer to achieving the desired result.
Be aware that you can be extremely lucky and reach it sooner, or unlucky and take much longer.


So get ready, you’ll need quite a few white items, some Orb of Transmutation and Orb of Augmentation, 6320 Regal Orbs, and a few thousand Exalted Orbs just to gamble further.

Not to mention the time spent gathering the necessary components...

P.S. If anyone still believes that the crafting system in this game is well-designed, I’m open to suggestions.

I gave up on PoE 2 after 5 days, it´s bad, anyone who says any different has never played an advanced ARPG game before and no diablo 3 & 4 does not count as they don´t have advanced mechanics nor crafting to begin with.

It should not even be called "Path Of Exile 2", rename it to something that doesn´t start with "Path Of Exile" and i can see it for what it is.

Agreed. There are many things in the game I could accept or adjust to, but having this terrible joke of an RNG slot machine in the place of real crafting is what did it for me. I love POE1 thanks to many things, but one of the main ones is the incredibly complex and interesting crafting. I miss it. I want it back. Clunky RNG is the opposite of fun.
PoE2 does not have crafting. We should stop calling it that, because it doesn't exist.

The currency system as it exists serves to allow slightly better odds at a random drop on the ground becoming a usable item, but on a scale of user agency between 1 and 10 where PoE1 sits at around an 8, PoE2 would be lucky to be pushing a 2. It allows you to increase the chance of an item with a set of good mods to get more useable mods by a MINISCUL amount, and that's it.
Indeed using the term "crafting" is a joke.
It's pure gambling, nothing more, nothing less.

The problem is that the average player doesn't realize how much mathematics and a malicious game design influence their experience.

In the absurd, nothing is random, i mean, it’s a system deliberately designed by the developers.

Thousands of bets lead the player to continue trying to achieve a result they will never get, but which will trap them online and keep them playing.

The gambling addiction created by betting systems is well-known.

Frankly speaking, the system is so bad right now that it's incredibly unlikely to do any such thing. The lack of even alterations existing means you are literally locked in the number of "attempts" you make at "crafting" an item to how many bases you can find in the first place. It is actually nearly impossible to use the currency that you do get in a meaningful way toward a specific piece of gear - the limiting factor to using transmutes and augs will almost certainly be a lack of meaningful bases to spend them on.

TL:DR; the current system is SO bad, it's not even capable of creating a gambling addiction despite being 100% gambling.

True, once you realize that you can't win, you stop trying, but the system makes you believe that you can succeed and, unless you've done the math, you keep trying.
