Chaos Ignition

I have the blackfire amethyst ring and my ignite does not spread with contagion, and my dark effigy will not target them while ignited.

While the enemies are taking Chaos Damage from your Ignites, your Ignites are still dealing Fire Damage.

I am new to this game and never played the 1st game so I don't really get all the key words and what exactly they mean, but this is the item description in question.

Enemies Ignited by you take Chaos Damage instead of Fire Damage from Ignite

...and the skill description.

Afflicts a single enemy with a Debuff that deals Chaos damage over time. If the enemy dies while affected by Contagion, it and all other Chaos damage over time Debuffs spread to nearby enemies and refresh their durations.

The part that's tripping you up is mostly the modifier on Blackflame:

Since Blackflame seems similar enough between PoE1 and PoE2, I'm supplimenting my understanding with its PoE1 Wiki Page. However, PoE2 still has different mechanics; it's possible this information may not be fully accurate.

Ignite can only deal Fire Damage over Time. This doesn't change by equipping Blackflame. The damage it deals is affected by modifiers like Fire Damage and Fire Damage over Time. The damage is not affected by Chaos Damage over Time modifiers at all, and is not affected by Chaos Damage modifiers unless you ignited the enemy with Chaos damage.

Blackflame doesn't affect the Ignite, it affects how the monster is damaged by the Ignite. You could also view Blackflame's modifier as though it applies an additional debuff on monsters you Ignite--because it affects the monster, not your Ignite.

Monsters you Ignite also take Chaos Damage from other players' Ignites.



Since Ignite does not deal Chaos Damage over Time, it cannot propagate through Contagion.
