"x% increased energy shield form equipped helmet/focus" not working with eldritch battery

the "x% increased energy shield form equipped helmet/focus" nodes seem not to be working when using eldritch battery, I got a gem and tried a passive node but neither one changed my mana or shield while I had a helmet or focus with energy shield equipped
