Lost POE1 Friends

I'm trying to add friends from POE1 and just can't get it to work. The POE1 friend list shows account names. From my understanding to add someone you need their character name. How am I supposed to find out what someone's character name is in POE2 when I can't even message them. It would have also been nice if the friend list just carried over...
