Game Crashed my PC, fried my M.2 SSD...

I've been playing for a bit now and thoroughly enjoy this game. I loaded into Act 3 and boom, my pc hard locks. I restarted it but kept on booting to BIOS. I had to take my NMVe M.2 SSD to a local PC center and they had given me the bad news, that shit was shot. $110 later, my PC is finally working again, but lost hundreds of GBs of clips, documents and applications that were on that SSD.

It's been at least 4-5 days since that happened and GGG hasn't done shit about it. At the end of the day, I just hope they figure out some sort of compensation for players like me that had their PCs broken and heavily compensated for players with PCs worse off.

First of all, I am genuinely sorry to hear about your files.

One of the advantages of SSDs over HDDs is that they are designed to enter a permanent read-only state upon reaching end-of-life. If the files on your previous SSD truly aren’t recoverable, then it sounds like your PSU fried it. Which manufacturer & model is your PSU? If you haven’t already replaced it, I would strongly, strongly recommend you consider it.

Either the PSU was dodgy, or an issue with the power from the wall made its way through the PSU and into at least one other component. It’s hard to regard that PSU as being reliable now - I would 1) get a new one, and, then, 2) commence stability testing to check other components for signs of damage. It’s the only way to regain some peace of mind going forwards.

Secondly, about GGG. Look, Path of Exile is written in programming languages such as C++, Lua, and - I’m guessing - Cg. It runs on your CPU & video card. It’s not going to have been the reason your drive failed. Credit the rest of us with some common sense, please - if Path of Exile killed SSDs after a few hours of gameplay, don’t you think we might’ve noticed?

Path of Exile 2, currently in Early Access, is the 15th most played game of all time on Steam, while also being available on PlayStation and Xbox. GGG aren’t some kind of underground indie studio no one’s heard of - literally millions of people have played Path of Exile.

Thirdly, while this advice may seem like it’s a day late and a dollar short, we’re about to enter 2025 and if you don’t have some kind of backup solution in place, you desperately need to fix that so this can never happen again. There a whole bunch of options to choose from.

Microsoft OneDrive, assuming you’re on Windows, would likely be the most convenient and simple option available. Most of my friends use either Google Drive or Dropbox. I prefer Proton Drive, personally, but it doesn’t really matter which company’s service you use. Just figure out either some kind of explicit backup solution, or at least some online file storage.
