Magma Race Boss - Energy Shield Problems

I ran a Tier 13 or so Vaal Factory map with this Magma racing boss at the end of it. When the fight began I engaged the boss and died instantly. The magma burned through 4400 energy shield instantly and killed me (chaos inoculation).
This was unexpected as all other content in the run was trivial.
