Affix tier overcomplication
I hate this reversed affix tier system. It doesn't tell you if what you got is the best rolled tier. This leads to confusion and frustration because if I want to know, I then have to stop playing the game and look it up elsewhere.
ex; Item has 30 fire res and says tier 7, is that the best? who knows... Can you please invert this so a bad low level noob item will say tier20 on it's low rolls instead of tier1? Then, once you get higher up you're looking for all tier1 items again? (this really annoys me) It's easy to understand as a new player ' I have this item, it says t20. then I find another item that has better stats and its t17 ' because then at that point your next question is, well is tier 1 or tier 0 the best? with the current system its like... ' I have this item, it says t1. then I find another item that has better stats and its t3 ' and from this point its like... well, what is the best roll that I should be trying to get? t7? t8? t9? t11? its not intuitive and inferior to the old system In poe1 we tried to get t1 rolls on items and it just made way more sense. It'd make even more sense to carry over that same system. since we learned to chase t1 items. people in my chat ask, "I just got this t7 resist, is it good, should i keep it, or craft on it?" ... and i have to tell them. " i don't know, you have to go look it up. " which sucks, cause even after looking these stat tier possibilities, you're not going to remember them forever, especially when some are best-in-slot at tier 5 ... 6? idk. while others are what, tier 11? is there higher? I have no idea. If it was simple, it would just say tier1 ( or 0 ) you get the idea.. ... I really hope this current system was the 'quick placeholder' and will be revised cause this system sucks ( sry ) another thing too is, if you quit the game and come back. you don't have to relearn / re-research these tiers... or even if you reroll and are now seeing different affix tiers... ex; my last character didnt get spirit on their gear... this new items says t6 spirit ( well i've seen t11 on other affix rolls in the game, this is only half it must be trash right? ) . . . see, if it just said nope, that's a t1 roll. its just so much more logical, intuitive etc... EDIT; Ill give an example. you're high level and an item drops, or just came back from over a year ago and are looking at an item in your bank. you think its has high value rolls. the item says... t6 t8 t8 t5 t9 t10 Is your item missing anything? are those the best rolls? you have no idea, right? My post is talkin about if the item just said; t1 t1 t1 t2 t1 t1 It's way easier from a fast glance to tell oh, ok, ya... this thing is cracked please, simplify this! I want to chase t1 items again!!! Last edited by shemlock123#4081 on Jan 10, 2025, 12:24:12 PM Last bumped on Feb 1, 2025, 4:19:40 PM

that would be equally as complicated. If anything, there could be like "show details" options and if toggled on, it would show maximum possible amount on that affix (and possibly also depending on the item level)
lets say you roll 30 fire resist, it will show 30 (45). Optionally, if it will be on ilvl 60, it will show 30 (38, 45) when the first number in bracket is maximum value for item level 60 and the second number is maximum for the modifier in game |

I was so confused why they switched the tiers around, but if they want to keep it this way for whatever reason, a simple fix would be to just append a forward slash and the max number, so for example if your mod is tier 5 and the max is 7 for that item, then it could say "tier 5/7"

It's amazing how whatever Jonathan touches turns out worse than it was before.

" +1. That's a really good suggestion. My guess is they switched it round so they don't have to revamp if new tiers are added at the top end, easier if they can keep increasing numbers and not rejig all the existing tiers. But you can still show the tier/max when pressing ALT no matter what the max tier for that item/level is. Looking for a mature guild to play with?

I'm cross-posting my reply to conversations that already exist instead of creating a new post:
I don't know what the general population's consensus is about whether lower or higher tiers are considered better but what _is_ clear is there are some clear disadvantages to using the new system: 1) It makes communication about items more difficult because any arbitrary affix on an arbitrary item has a different value for best tier. With the previous system, Tier 1 was always the best regardless of context. 2) The current system/UI makes it unclear how far you are away from the best tier. With tier 1 being best, you always know how far away you are from the best. There were some concerns that led to the tier change: 1) Consistency in the game. This is a valid point -- however, there could be alternative solutions (with their own pros and cons) like using different terminology based on context. For example, item affixes can be Tiers, maps can be Levels, and Unidentified items can use Stars. This has a downside of adding more terminology to the game but at least there won't be contradictions using all the same terminology and they can have their own expectations about what is considered best or harder correspondingly. 2) What happens when you add new tiers of affixes to the mod pool. Personally, I see no issue with this from a player's perspective -- I generally only care about what tier I'm in, knowing the specific values within that tier usually is only discussed in different contexts. |
