The obvious compromise on portals
Implement the contraband mechanic from Heist. Any loot you pick up in a map is unusable/unequippable until you clear the map, and is dropped on death/portal out.
On re-entering the map, you have to restart from the beginning with all mobs respawned a la Dark Souls/Elden Ring (clearing a rare spawns a checkpoint.) If you can get back to your loot, you get to reclaim it. If you die before doing so, it's gone for good along with the waystone. Last bumped on Jan 12, 2025, 7:20:14 PM
