character names
One issue I had with the first game was naming the characters. At the start of a new league, we need to create a new character with a new name however I’m competing with thousands if not millions of people to create a unique name but most time it is taken already so I come up with another and another until I'm frustrated enough to smash my hand to the keyboard, select that as my name and it too was taken (actually happened). All that to say we should not have to spend so much time trying to create a name.
One thing I have seen new MMOs implement is having character names be prefixes to your account name: character_name.account_name but the account name is invisible to everyone (including yourself) in the game. This allows players to use whatever name they want. Something I think would be important to streamers so they can ensure their brand character names are not taken. Anyway, I hope GGG can implement this because the frustrating part of the game should be naming the character. Last bumped on Jan 13, 2025, 5:36:55 PM

There is a resource for name generators on the forum, here:
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/70376 I hope this provides some help for those in search of good, unique character names. =^[.]^= =^[.]^= basic (happy/amused) cheetahmoticon: Whiskers/eye/tear-streak/nose/tear-streak/eye/

I have used name generators before but that's not the issue. The name I want to use is usually taken and/or I would need to add a string of unnecessary characters like Xs or _ or - to make it work.

" Let's suppose you always like your character to be named Bartholomew. However, someone else beat you to it. You need something to differentiate your "Bartholomew" so that you can use the name. Just add some adjective (front or back), such as: Bartholomew the: -Bold -Heartless -Intransigent -One_and_Only ...Or, as a prefix: -Ugly -Clever -Ill-Omened -Ladies_Man Statistically speaking, some number of those combinations have never been used. You can even use this idea to create a "family" of characters, and you can generate a stable of name-holders for when you need the names later. =^[.]^= =^[.]^= basic (happy/amused) cheetahmoticon: Whiskers/eye/tear-streak/nose/tear-streak/eye/

" These are great suggestions and I'm not knocking them; I have used these methods myself, however, these methods are band-aids to the issue, not a solution. Granted re-structuring how a system handles the naming convention of an object is a massive undertaking that may not be worth GGGs effort (especially now that the game has been released). That said, my hope is that if i bring it up on the forums it would garner some attention from the devs, and if time and resources allow the issue may be resolved. |

The problem is, the standing naming convention was something to which GGG committed a decade ago. Aside from it not being a priority issue, to change how things are done in this regard would be seen by many as breaking that commitment, and GGG doesn't need that kind of additional flak. ='[.]'=
