Portals are disabled in boss fights

i am sure you should be able to portal out after a boss is dead.
I was not able to portal out in the boss area  it was possible to leave the boss area, so the game knows the boss is dead. outside the boss area i was able to create a portal, after reentering the boss area it was the same issue.
