Path of Exile as a "hobby"

To understand the passion many players feel about Path of Exile, you must first understand the concept of "hobby gaming."

Hobbyists of any stripe, stamp collectors, people who build model ships in bottles, tabletop wargamers, surfers, 4H animal rearing kids, whatever... All of them invest a huge amount of passion and enthusiasm in their selected pastimes. They don't just perform the activity; they accumulate knowledge and skills and participate in communities of like-minded enthusiasts as a form of culture.

For many players, Path of Exile is not just a game they play for the grins; they play it as a hobby, something they do to the degree that it has become a focus of their lives, even a part of their identity. And, before you start mocking them and telling them to "get a life," some self-reflection might be in order, because it is a universally human thing to have such an enthusiasm, and you may well not recognize one in yourself.

All that said, for those who have invested more than just time and supporter dollars into Path of Exile, the way their preferred game has been treated is of deep importance to them. Doubly so, since, for many, their relationship with GGG often going back over a decade has seen a lot of changes, and not for the better. Yes, the acquisition of GGG by TenCent looms large in the background, but it remains the personalities with whom GGG has been associated, and their conduct, which most deeply affect these players, including a growing pattern of communications failures and apparent deceptions by those once trusted to be the "most ethical" game company in the world.

So, if Path of Exile is just a game for you, fine. Enjoy your casual pastime. For others, it is a chosen enthusiasm, and they care a LOT more about it, and cannot be faulted for expressing their concerns. ='[.]'=

Not like most of the OG have many years of gaming left in them anyway. For one reason or another.

Speaking from arguably unprecedented experience, it's no fun realising being a whale has an expiration date.

Oh well. Time for the old Exiles to find another more-than-a-hobby. If you deem that somehow healthy in this age of disposable Live Service games.

You had one hell of a ride. Be thankful for that much. A lot of more-than-a-hobby gamers don't.

Are there drinks at this wake or is this one of those boring somber affairs where we all pretend how awesome PoE1 was? Because it wasn't, a lot of the time. If it were, you wouldn't be a known forum user. Again: speaking from experience.

PS. I think PoE2 is awesome, and I am so glad that the company I supported more than most of you eventually made it. But that's what it means to support a company and not just the game that brings *you* pleasure -- when it's time to make another game, you don't begrudge them that, even if it might not be to your personal tastes.

PPS. Also, you get to take your mtxes with you. I really wish more of you appreciated this, because a LOT of GaaS wouldn't have bothered.

Viva la Grinding Gear GameS. Finally.

Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts. No exceptions. Not even for billionaires.

Post this sentiment publicly and see how long it lasts here.

Then you should seek help, a hobby shouldn't affect you guys on this level, if my hobby is gaming, there are plenty of games, I'd call this fanboyism instead of hobby, is no different from those fangirls of any Korean group being mad and going crazy when one of them gets a gf or does something that breaks that illusion they created on their minds.

You are acting the same way, games die, eventually every single game you like will die in order for other to be made, if gaming is your hobby you have to keep this in mind so you don't lose your (apparently) reason to live when changes are made

And who are you to tell people how they should or shouldn't enjoy their hobbies? The entitlement is real my guy.

Entitlement? I mean is common sense that if some pixels are messing with you in real life, help is needed. The same way if I see someone bleeding cause they can let go what is hurting them I'd say "just let it go"

Entitlement in on these (and apparently you too) side, that think a company HAS to do what you all say and want just because is your "hobby" lol

Sure kid, I guess behaving like this because your "hobby" is not the same it used to be, it's a sign of maturity and knowledge hahaha

Ending a sentence with "hahaha" is also a clear-cut sign of maturity, ey?

People find passion in different things, be that already mentioned things like stamps or whatever. People can be just as passionate about pixels, be that sharing a game with their son, their wife or their friends for 10 years. And you know what defines a passion? Feelings. Strong ones. So that people are upset is totally understandable.

And it's not just about "PoE dying", it's also about how GGG are handling the situation. If PoE died because of dropped player numbers and no longer was profitable, even my neighbor's dead cat would understand it. But if it dies just because GGG want it to die, despite saying it would be supported with new leagues and "not being affected by PoE 2", it's a little bit harder to understand/swallow.
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

You are being patronizing and obnoxious but I guess that was the entire point of your posts so far right?

You just don't get it at all and aren't very informed. Diablo 1 and 2 can still be played D2R even got some new stuff not long ago, Ultima Online, launched a new kind of server (Shard) semi recently... I logged into that a few months ago. Basically the first MMORPG and golden era ARPG's. So you're wrong about games dieing.

Point is you are both lacking basic knowledge needed to understand AND the deep obsession/passion for the hobby to allow you to put yourself in an actual gamers shoes.

I know people who loose their shit online about the company that owns Jeep, due to mismanagement and overpricing they spend then of thousands of dollars a year bolting things to 4x4's that will probably never even need to navigate a challenging gravel parking lot at a outdoor music festival or some shit. They love their hobby just like many gamers do. Its all the same shit my dude, and you lack the passion or perspective to understand it is all. Thinking of getting an old 60's CJ2 to restore with my kid speaking of Jeeps.

I'd guess that Fandom in general is deeply connected with ADHD, specifically the part where we have a hard time paying attention to anything that isn't our obsession. Counting myself in that we if it wasn't obvious.

Anyway: games don't "just die" Ultima Online, WoW, D2 and probably POE1 will be most likely be played up til the hypothetical moment we go extinct. And your puzzlement that many of us care deeply is just another way to say you're a not prone to obsession, a casual gamer, or a dabbler, or perhaps just not ADHD. You'd understand if you were.
Pandering to players who don't want consequences for their mistakes is a perfect description of what went fundamentally wrong with D3 and 4.
If they wanted mindless mobile game time waster gameplay they sure did make some perplexing choices and marketing statements for 6 fucking years.
