Cannot upgrade a tamed companion

I can select the gem but when clicking to upgrade with a higher level gem and meeting the requirements it just says the action cannot be completed.

Quadrilla right now. It wouldn’t work with a different monster either, forget which it was. I’ll try a different one later tonight.
