Defences/Stats gained 'Companions in presence' are not working with multiple companions

As stated, I have multiple nodes selected that give me increased defences while in the presence of my companiniosn but, even when my compantions are active/inactive, my defences only change as if I have 1 companion, not 2 active. I have unequipped and re-equipped companion gems but my defences do not change while both are active leads me to believe that the damage increase portion of the nodes also are not working/increasing based off number of companions. Edit: it appears the presence aura of the companions works off the 'size' of the companion as well instead of being static in terms of increases and decreases.

You're either in the presence of a companion or you are not. I don't think there's anything that implies you'd get a benefit per companion. What is the precise wording of the modifier in question?
I'm not talking about map modifiers, these are the passive nodes that are in question. All of the comapnion nodes read as singular. It seems they were implemented with you only having 1 companion active except for the Notable - Trust Kinship. With the notable, 2 can be active but you lose 30% defense which should be offset by the defences you gain by having 2 active and committing passive points into all the companion nodes. If this isn't the case, all of the companions passive nodes are poorly worded.
