Essence mob canceled active Ritual

I broke open an essence monster, went a screen or so away and started a Ritual. (The essences were Envy and Contempt) One of the mod effects was the giant grasping hand that grabs at you (cold snap mtx?). It somehow teleported me out of the Ritual, which instantly stopped as though I'd completed it.
